ALL the wrong memories are being stoked. When police barged in on a PTI youth convention on Thursday, trying to make arrests, the government that ordered them to do so was repeating the mistakes of two years ago. But when they followed up that action with the tear-gassing and violence in Rawalpindi yesterday, they compounded the folly, stirring memories of 2014 when police brutality led to the deaths of 14 people in Model Town, Lahore, and created a furore that has lingered to the present day. Yet, today the PML-N appears hell-bent on repeating its mistakes. Protesters are once more being pursued with strong-arm tactics in a futile attempt to stall the PTI protest planned for Nov 2, and containers loaded with export consignments, are being impounded to be used as hindrances for the caravans that are set to travel up the roads connecting Lahore with Islamabad — roads ironically that Nawaz Sharif proudly presents as emblems of his successful rule. For his part, Imran Khan is vitiating the atmosphere with his incendiary rhetoric.
It is true that protesting against corruption is his right, and that the Panama Papers need to be investigated. But the kind of firebrand language he is using does nothing more than poison the air and make any sort of engagement or negotiation impossible. In fact, there is good reason for the government’s insecurity, given the memories of the last dharna. At that time too, Mr Khan had marched to Islamabad saying he was coming for a ‘peaceful protest’, but then proceeded to storm the red zone in the capital, with mobs from the PTI and PAT attacking parliament and the PTV buildings. He may claim that his followers engaged in no violence, but that is too fine a hair to split in the midst of such rancour. This time around, when he says once again that his intentions are peaceful, there are grounds to be sceptical, especially given the fiery rhetoric he and his supporters are using to exhort people to join them.Both parties need to calm down. Pakistan’s is still a fledgling democracy which needs to be strengthened in the face of all challenges;

Likewise, while the state has a right to take security precautions, it must realise that brute force of the sort seen over the last few days is counterproductive to maintaining peace.white plisse seersucker fabric shower curtainPublished in Dawn, October 29th, 2016dritz 1-9/16-inch inner diameter curtain grommetsHabib Muhammad is a direct descendent of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) through the Hussaini line and hails from a prominent Hijazi family. I’m constantly on the lookout for knick naks that will make the space more inviting and if you follow me on social media you’ll notice I recently picked up a few larger pieces for my lounge and bedroom.I’m giving away R2000 in vouchers to help you makeover a room in your house, scroll to the end of the post for competition details!
My bedroom has been a work in progress for the past three months, it all started with an incredible mid century style dresser that I found at Re-Trend In Linden, which pretty much set the tone for the entire room…and my house. Next came the paint. When we moved in the feature wall in our room was this weird grey colour that I hated from the moment I saw it. Craig and I hummed and hawed for ages what colour to repaint it until we decided on just going with plain white. As we were about to get cracking on painting the whole room white, Dulux approached me and asked me to try out their colour of the year – Steel Symphony 2 – my immediate thought was ‘NO, not more grey!’ until I actually did a swatch on my wall and saw what an incredibly beautiful colour it really is…and no I’m not just saying that! Our entire apartment has parquet flooring ( a requirement that I insisted on when we were looking for a place), and the grey turns an incredible modge podge of grey and blue when mixed with the dark wood of the floor and the dresser and it actually adds light to the room instead of sucking it out like I thought a dark colour would!
To mix things up we decided to paint the feature wall white and the rest of the room with Steel Symphony instead of the other way round. Which brings me to my new pride and joy my headboard, also from Re-Trend! If you like mid century furniture you’ll know that headboards are hard to come by, especially when you have a queen size bed. They just didn’t make headboards that size back in the day. So finding this beauty was so lucky I still can’t believe it…and it just happens to match the dresser! The rest of the room was decorated by a few new goodies and a few old ones…and of course loads of plants because a room isn’t a room unless it’s a jungle right? The picture above our bed is of Craig and I on our wedding day, it was his present to me on our first wedding anniversary…because, you know, paper! The cute illustration on Craig’s side of the bed is an illustration I commissioned Maria Magdalena to do for him for the same anniversary. I got a couple of the pots from Mr P Home on sale which was such a bargain, and then the rest of the decorations were all from charity stores or gifts that I’ve had for ages just waiting to find the perfect space for them.
