Situated opposite Emirates Palace on one of the best hotel sites in town, next to Abu Dhabi’s new Presidential Palace. Most rooms have views over the sea and surrounding islands, and there’s a pleasant sense of detachment from the downtown area, though a bus route runs nearby. Guests can walk to Marina Mall and walk or cycle along the Corniche. Like most hotels at this end of town, it’s about a half-hour taxi ride from the airport. The squeaky-clean hotel is part of a complex of four towers, three of which are upscale apartments and one of which, the largest at 21 storeys, is the hotel. Its lobby is fairly grand, leading into an impressive atrium, though there’s over-use of a house scent. The pool and beach area are fairly compact but well-maintained and a pleasure to be in. Both restaurants have outside terraces. The hotel was full when I visited, with a five-minute wait to be seated at breakfast, and the spa doesn’t always pick up the phone. I wasn’t a fan of the fact that two staff members were permanently positioned in the middle of the lobby to ‘assist’ guests.

At the restaurants, beach and housekeeping, staff were well informed and present. There are tennis courts, a brand new, well-equipped gym, a spa with six treatment rooms (book Ta for the best Thai massage), squash courts, sauna and steam room and a watersports centre for jet ski and kayak rental. Standard rooms are large and light, with tiled floors, a rug, small kitchenettes with an electric hob and tea and coffee making facilities and big refrigerators, though not all have balconies.
