“Some people care too much. I think it’s called love.” One of my favorite motivational speakers is John O’Leary, and his message this week was caring is a choice, so choose to care. As I roamed through Adam’s Camp on this fine Wednesday, it was another day I found myself inspired by being around a battalion of people who have chosen to care. Easily the highlight of the day was the adventure camp talent show after dinner. As we were preparing to start and the crowd was so excited, somebody screamed “On with the show,” which reminded me of the classic Bugs Bunny intro that I watched every morning growing up – “Overture, curtains, lights! This is it, we’ll hit the heights, and oh, what heights we’ll hit!” (For extra laughs, watch the “Seinfeld” version). The audience even survived my attempt at a sing-along version of Tom Petty’s “I won’t back down.” The best moments were the unexpected, like when the shy girl who is happy to lay low busted out a full on hip-hop routine that would make J-Lo proud.

Or when five girls climbed onstage to do a routine to Taylor Swift’s “Shake it off” that quickly erupted into the entire room jumping up and dancing along.

Counselors were buzzing around to make sure each camper had sunscreen, swimsuits and all of the other gear necessary for the day. While at Winter Park, I had the pleasure to caddie for Mike and Eli on the mini golf course. Mike may struggle with walking and talking, but I certainly wish I could stroke a 3-foot putt like him – he was money every time! After wrapping up a full morning of mini-golf, bungee trampoline jumping and alpine sliding, the next stop for the adventure campers was the Grand Park Recreation Center in Fraser. This public facility is as nice as any of the big fitness centers I have visited. The facility has a full gymnastics setup which my wife Jill, a high school All American gymnast, would love. For Adam’s Campers, this was the chance to bounce insanely high, swing on ropes, fly through the air and always enjoy a soft landing. There was also a giant pool with a water slide and lazy river our campers took full advantage of, under the watchful eyes of counselors who, because they chose to care, were doing headcounts pretty much every minute to make sure everybody was above water.

Meanwhile, the therapists were taking their campers to the popular Snow Mountain tubing hill, which never disappoints in producing high-pitched screams of glee. Some of the young campers were anxious about going down the hill, and the therapists used soothing techniques and reassuring voices to ease the tension. Yep, they chose to care. Why did I not know about these magicians when my kids were young? Field day was another highlight for the therapy campers as they enjoyed a beautiful day outside throwing balls, racing to fill buckets with soaked sponges and jumping in and out of hula-hoops. We have reached the halfway point of the week and because all of these wonderful people care too much, I see bonds forming and friendships building with no signs of the energy level dropping. On with the show, this is it! (Note: new Adam’s Camp Executive Director Jay Clark will be blogging daily from Adam’s Camp 2015 at Snow Mountain Ranch in Granby, CO. These posts come at the end of a long day, so pardon any typos!)
