And now, preparations are already being made to celebrate Aidilfitri. While Ramadhan in Malaysia is incomplete without a visit to the numerous pasar ramadhan dotted throughout the Klang Valley, such is the case with Aidilfitri, where the pre-Raya shopping trip takes top spot on the must-do list for families and singles alike.
And if there’s anything else Malaysians love more than shopping, it’s striking a good bargain. As such, Malaysian Digest has prepared a list of ‘must-visit’ places for Malaysians to do their Raya shopping. From baju melayu to baju kurung, kain sampan to kuih raya, we have compiled a list of possible places where Klang Valley folk can pick out the essentials to celebrate Aidilfitri with. Shopping for traditional clothing for men, women, and children is a definite must for Hari Raya. And there’s no better place that offers a variety of clothing with great deals better than the rows of shops and stalls along the stretch of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, commonly known as Jalan TAR, and Masjid India. Ranging from women’s clothing to songkok and small accessories such as brooches, Jalan TAR is the one-stop shopping destination for those who are looking to buy different things at one place. The closer Hari Raya draws, the greater the bargain are. Jalan TAR is usually merrier at night after Muslims have had their ‘buka puasa’ and/or performed their ‘tarawikh’ prayers.
The environment is even more exciting and lively on Hari Raya eve itself as this is the time where vendors reduce prices, hoping to clear their stock before Hari Raya. Another venue that promises good bargains, but situated outside KL, is the PKNS complex in Shah Alam, which offers almost the same range of items. Although the range may be smaller than those in Jalan TAR and Masjid India, it is nevertheless worth a visit if you’re not keen on wading through the nightmarish KL traffic. Many Muslim women in Malaysia adorn headscarves as part of their culture or Islamic practice and it has now become part of contemporary women’s fashion as well. Shopping for the right kind of headscarf of good price and quality would definitely be on the Hari Raya shopping list. Such items are in abundance along the stalls of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, where a variety of designs, colours and price range awaits the buyer. However, shoppers with a higher spending budget could opt for the ‘Ariani’ designer boutiques, which have a higher-quality range retailing at more than RM20 per item.
Ariani boutiques can be found at Jalan Masjid India, Shah Alam, Wangsa Maju and other areas. Many shopping malls in Malaysia offer a wide range of handbags and shoes, but none come with great prices like the ones offered at the KL SOGO shopping mall in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. It is arguably ‘the place’ to buy handbags and shoes, which although aren’t high-end designer items, yet offer great bargains. KL SOGO is usually the centre of attention for KL-ites come Hari Raya season, and is also a hotspot during the Malaysian Mega Sale period. Apart from handbags and shoes, also available are men’s clothing and children’s apparel, as well as cosmetics and perfume. Markdowns of prices can reach up to 80 per cent, which makes it all the more popular among shopaholics. Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Shah Alam’s PKNS Complex still take the top spots under this category. The stretch of stalls along Jalan TAR offer an unprecedented range of Raya goodies and delicacies to entertain visitors to one’s home.
From traditional kuih such as kuih bangkit, samprit, sarang semut, batang buruk to newer ones like almond London, pohpiah nestum, and others. Smart shoppers usually visit the Jalan TAR bazaar on the eve of Raya, when bargains are at its best. Discounts up to 80 per cent aren’t uncommon, as are two-for-one deals. In traditional Malay families, Hari Raya Aidilfitri is usually the time when old furniture is consigned to the scrap heap, and new furniture bought to brighten the home. This is to ensure that visitors to the home would be pleasantly surprised by the new décor. For new Raya furniture, outlets such as Courts Mammoth are usually favourites due to their generous Raya sales, coupled with their installment scheme for those wishing to stretch out payments. IKEA has also been a mainstay for the Raya season, also offering good deals while the latest player in the market is the Viva Furniture Mall in Cheras, which is a sprawling complex dedicated only towards furniture retail at decent prices.
Jakel, SSF Curtain and Gulatis  - these are the three outlets synonymous with affordable carpets and curtains for the holiday festivities. All three outlets offer a vast range of soft furnishing items, ready-made or otherwise. Those keen on exploring Jakel’s wide range of products can visit their outlet at Section 7, Shah Alam, where a cavernous marquee has been set up housing its massive range of products. It may be too late to purchase loose cloth or textile for custom-made baju kurung or baju melayu, as most tailors now have their hands full with pre-orders sent in well before Ramadhan. However, this usually doesn’t deter shoppers, who nevertheless choose the Ramadan period to buy textile in bulk. Textiles purchased during Ramadan are usually cheaper, and these are used to later make clothes for either work or functions such as weddings. While places such as Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman offer pre-cut textile for a standard-sized baju kurung, those seeking bales of uncut cloth would do well to seek out places such as Nagoya (with several outlets in the Klang Valley), and Gulati’s.
