Ikeas advertisement of Chuck out the chintz certainly worked and people chucked out all the furnishings that their parents had previously thought essential for a properly furnished home.
I wont say that the clock is turning back, but in the last couple of years I have definitely had more requests for curtains than I had in the past 15. So to explain what some of them are and what are the advantages.Roman BlindsThe most popular of blinds, this folded blind can be made to fit any window; it can sit within the revel of the window or outside. Easily made with blackout lining or even in a light flimsy fabric, it is the workhorse of window treatments and seen in most bedrooms now. Modern advances in blind control systems have mechanised the previous tendrils of cords that used to decorate the back of the blind making it much easier to install and control.Roller BlindsAgain another useful fixture in the decorators armoury, it can be custom made in any fabric with blackout backing or even made with net style fabric stiffened to enable it to roll. The downside of this adaptable blind is the way it looks when rolled up at the top of the window. However, this can be hidden behind a covered lathe.
CurtainsI personally still like curtains, even if they are only dress (not used) curtains. I like the way they frame the window adding an often essential bit of colour to a room, deadening what can be echoy hard surfaces. But I do understand and know that in modern interiors they dont often look right. But that is changing. There are some lovely new curtain headings that look perfect in modern interiors. The wave heading, a gentle synious bend of curtain on a simple slimline track set to the ceiling. Eyelet curtains on metal poles. Or simple fluted heading on an acrylic pole. ) to get some inspiration.Poles v TracksThis really is a matter of horses for courses. There are some places where a pole just wont go and only a track will do. I have come to dislike the track on a covered lathe, but it does have its place in some situations. Poles have had a renaissance recently and can be purchased in so many different combinations: Corded, clear acrylic, wood, metal, funky colours, thick or thin with a huge variety of other finishes.
