le Fire Brigade (CFA)DON'T LET LIGHTS TURN INTO FLAMES The festive season is well and truly here and CFA wants to make sure you celebrate without any sparks. Christmas lights are a favourite for many households, however they can also become a fire risk if not used correctly. Edithvale CFA recommends you should inspect all old Christmas lights and electrical wires for signs of damage or wear and tear before you put them on your tree. Check that all globes are properly fitted and avoid using light sets with missing globes. This will ensure other conductive items cannot get inside the light socket. Everyone needs to remember that when Christmas lights were left on for an extended period of time they could overheat. So make sure you turn off and unplug your Christmas lights before going to bed and when leaving your home unattended. We suggest instead of overloading power points or using multiple adaptors consider using battery-operated LED lights, which don’t require electricity. While the number of fires caused by Christmas lights is quite low there is still the potential for incidents to be severe due to the combustible material these lights are attached to, such as a dried Christmas tree and decorations. Top tip

s to keep fire out of your home this Christmas: 1. Use no more than three sets of lights per power board, even if there are four or more outlets on it. Avoid using double adaptors. 2. Make sure you have a safety switch in your meter box or have a qualified electrician install one. 3. Make sure electric cords are completely uncoiled and not placed under rugs or mats. 4. Place your tree as far as possible from any heat source, curtains or furnishings. 5. Maintain water in the base of natural Christmas trees to stop them drying out and remove lights once they show signs of drying. 6. Take care with candles, incense sticks and oil burners. Always make sure they are away from flammable items such as curtains and that they cannot be knocked over. 7. Always keep matches, candles and lighters away from infants and small children. 8. Check that your smoke alarms are working. Christmas tree fires can generate a lot of heat quickly and spread to the rest of the house. We wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas! Edithva

Crews managed to contain the fire within the bathroom, which was well alight upon arrival, with the assistance of a resident who closed the door upon discovering the fire 'by chance'. A non-operational smoke detector within the house proved worthless on this occ...asion whereas it could've provided an early alert of the fire and prevented further damage if connected. The cause of the fire is not suspicious. An overheated exhaust fan was the point of origin dropping molten plastic into plastic toys and other items in the bath and surrounds. To commemorate this historic occasion the brigade meeting involved addresses from Hon Tim Richardson MP, State Member for Mordialloc, Cr Tamsin Bearsley, Mayor City of ...Kingston, Operations Manager Mark Kennedy and Captain Graham Fountain. In addition five Ex-Captains (Jack Neate, Frank Ashwin, Andrew Gibson, Michael West and Kruno Horvatincic) also provided a reflection on the history of the brigade and particularly the construction and operations from the current station that was built and funded primarily by brigade members. The current station has served the brigade well for 47 years having been officially opened on 16 August 1969, but is well past its functional life. The eve

nt also included a brigade photo which included several life members, honorary members and former ladies auxiliary members. A common theme expressed throughout the addresses was the vibrant nature of the brigade and its activities within the community, delivered by in excess of 110 members comprising over 30% female membership. The brigade is in the process of transitioning to its temporary facility with demolition and construction of the new station anticipated to commence in early January, following the awarding of contracts by December this year.
