Three months later than we expected, but I’ve learned that when renovating, anything and everything will happen. There will be delays, and rarely does anything go the way you think it’s going to! But finally, at last, another room is marked off the list! Before I show the reveal, I always like to revisit where we began with the master bedroom. This is what it looked like when we bought our home. It was a large bedroom with lots of wonderful windows and closet space. But as you can see, it was still living in 1972, with wall to wall pink shag carpet;
floor to ceiling, metallic foil, rose wallpaper; and of course the popcorn ceiling. I’m sure those drapes were custom made and very expensive in 1972. Even 40 years later, they look expensive, just not my style. Surrounding the room was very nice chair railing and moulding, though it got a little lost with everything else going on. Now that I’ve shocked your senses a little bit, I’ll show you the newly renovated master bedroom! So much lighter, no more heaviness in the room. It’s bright and comfortable. The first thing we did was remove the old carpeting, which was an improvement all by itself. Then we removed the drapes and old cornice boards. In this room, we planked over the top of the popcorn ceiling, and it’s finished in a white pickling stain to give it a very light, whitewashed look.  I absolutely love the way it turned out. Every morning when I open my eyes, I see that ceiling, and I always think to myself how gorgeous it is. To see how we planked over the popcorn ceiling, click here.
We attempted to remove the old wallpaper, but as usual {I know I keep repeating myself}, it would not come off of the walls without taking the sheet rock with it. This seems to be a repeat performance in every room we renovate. We planked the walls in the dining room when the wallpaper wouldn’t come off, but with the master bedroom, we decided to paint over the wallpaper above the chair rail. Below the chair rail, we added tongue and groove wood.duffy's curtains north earl street All of the wood, chair rail, baseboards, crown moulding and trim got painted, and we laid new wood floors.dollar curtains wagga We added more trim and moulding to the tops of all the doors, giving the appearance of taller doors. target sunblock curtains
We’re trying to do this in all of the rooms as we remodel them. Probably one of the best things we did in this room, was add the two built in cabinets, one on each side of the window seat. I love a built in cabinet and this bedroom is so large that it handles the addition of the floor to ceiling cabinets perfectly. We enjoy having a tv in the bedroom, but I like to have it hidden away when we’re not watching it, so these cabinets were the perfect solution.faux suede curtains 90x90 Hubby is getting pretty good at executing my ideas. greenwich plaid curtainsAll I have to do is draw him a sketch of what I want and he builds it. the tortilla curtain 1995This time, he didn’t even roll his eyes when I started drawing…..who says old dogs can’t learn new tricks?!?curtain shops in urmston manchester
The base cabinets are off the shelf, stock, sink cabinets from the big box home improvement stores. Hubby built the cabinet above the base, as well as the doors, using salvaged wood. We added wood appliqués to the doors and feet underneath the front, to give it more of a furniture appearance. We filled the openings in the doors with my “go to” metal grill. It comes in sheets and we painted it with oil rubbed bronze paint, then lightly dry brushed gray chalk paint over the top. The outside of the cabinets are painted in layers of chalk paint, starting with French Linen, then dry brushing Paris Gray over the top. I clear waxed them and added dark wax into the grooves and all the details. The inside is painted in a coat of Greek Blue, then a layer of Provence. I’m still tweaking the inside….I love old antique books, especially french books, but I find that I don’t have enough! I will have to start hunting for them again. Our king size cane bed was given a coat of chalk paint in Old White.
It was originally painted black, and it’s not old. We purchased it about 10 years ago. I never liked the black and always planned on painting it, but never seemed to get around to it. The remodel of the bedroom pushed me to go ahead and get it done. The two French cane chairs originally belonged to Ms. Irene {the original and only owner of our home}. The family was kind enough to leave a few pieces with the house when we purchased it, and I love these chairs. I didn’t do anything to them other than make a linen slipcover for them in a pretty duck egg blue, cover the armrests, and add nail head trim. I actually pulled the old sewing machine out, {fondly called “The Betsy Ross”}, to make the slipcovers. It was my first attempt at making slipcovers, and now I remember why I hate sewing. It’s so much easier to just use fabric glue…..I wonder how many bottles it would take to make ruffles…… The old plaster lamps got some new burlap shades and I love the texture they add.
This lamp belonged to my precious mother in law {Evelyn}, and she always called it, “The Three Graces”. After the lamp was passed on to me, I searched for years, trying to find a mate, but never could find one, and I finally gave up. Five years ago, hubby and I were in a flea market in Alabama, and I turned a corner and there it was. Needless to say, it came home with me. I haven’t seen another one since. This wonderful little French settee was found an estate sale, and it has sat in a storage room since we moved in. I knew it would go in the master bedroom, whenever it was completed. It looks wonderful sitting under the curved bank of windows. I have to talk about our chandelier…… You will never believe where it came from…... The entire time that this room was under renovation, I searched and searched for just the right chandelier. Because the room is large {over 300 sq. ft.} the chandy needed to be large as well, and it needed to be in my frugal budget. I couldn’t find anything that worked.
I was getting really frustrated, and just a little bit nervous, that this room was going to be finished, but have no chandy! Little did I know what was about to happen…… was having, called the “I Love it Moment” sweepstakes. It was all about experiencing a “love it moment in your home”. I entered our kitchen renovation as my “love it moment”…..and I won!! I had no idea that they sell lighting….lots of gorgeous lighting, including beautiful chandeliers! I was able to choose this beautiful French chandelier {along with some other things for upcoming renos} for our bedroom, and it is just perfect. I absolutely love it. It was fun bringing in some of my old vintage pieces and accessories, the old gilded  mirrors, and a cherub frame that I’ve been hoarding until I could figure out what I wanted to do with it. It ended up being the perfect way to frame my Santos angel. Several months ago I found this huge gesso frame, it was a really good price, and I couldn’t walk away from it.
So we hauled it home. I ended up covering the backing with burlap and then mounted this wonderful 19th c. French church processional banner inside of it. There’s many  more details that you can see in the pictures. I hope you have enjoyed seeing the reveal of the master bedroom {finally!}. I’m going to try and do a source list at the end, but if I miss something, or you have a question, please leave a comment and ask, I try really hard to answer all of your questions! I still have a little bit of tweaking to do. I want to make a cushion for the window seat, and maybe move the French chairs and add a bench at the foot of the bed….I also need to replace the old 1970’s ceiling lights in the hallway. We’ll have to see how it evolves over the next few months! If you love our master bedroom renovation, be sure and pin it to your Pinterest boards.
