Please take a look around, and if you are interested in our fabrics, then why not come down to one of our stores. There are a number of specialist quilting shops on the outskirts of Manchester. There is a specialist quilt supplier called Patchfinders located in Poynton (formerly in Cheadle Hulme). Patchfinders has a large range of wadding, which is often hard to get hold of in mainstream shops, as well as just about any quilting tool you could ever need or want: needles, chalk, quilting rulers, rotary cutters, and a mini iron(!). You can buy fabric from the bolt, and there are loads of precut fat quarters. What’s more, Patchfinders run regular workshops. I really want to try one of the “Activity half days” where a quilt expert will help you with any project!
Patchfinders is open Monday to Saturday from 9:30am to 4:30pm. I haven’t managed to visit the following two quilt supplies shops yet, but it’s always great to support quilt shops which do a fantastic job of encouraging quilting in their local community. Patchwork Parade is located in Chadderton, Oldham. It’s about a 20 mins drive from Manchester city centre. You can visit Tuesday to Saturday from 10 til 4, and they promise that a warm welcome awaits you, which is jolly nice! More information can be found on the Patchwork Parade website. A little further out is Patchwork Gallery in Knutsford, about 35 mins drive from Manchester City Centre. Visits are by appointment only. Quilting supplies are also available from Bamber Sewing Machine Center, on Liverpool Road, Eccles. They are very knowledgeable about things patchwork and quilty and they run a number of courses and workshops, as well as do sewing machine repairs. I am still discovering the best places to get quilting supplies in Manchester.
By far, my recommendation for the best place to buy fabric is Leon’s Fabric Store in Chorlton – an Aladdin’s cave chock full of every type of fabric you could wish for. They don’t have as many plain fabrics as I’d like but plenty of patterns, and the service is always very friendly. You can buy most fabrics by the half metre and they have one type of wadding on sale too; and they have a wide range of Gutermann threads. The Sew In in Cheadle (formerly Didsbury) has some general sewing supplies. I often buy bias binding from here, they have a good selection and you can ask for whatever length. Also, I don’t know if this is a recent thing, or whether I’ve only just noticed but The Sew In sells fat quarter bundles! Last time I popped in they had around 20 bundles including some lovely looking gingham style. Art & Craft House are a small art and craft supplier who sells fat quarters, batting and some quilters’ accessories. They also run a hand quilting course. You can visit them in Salford.
Black Sheep Wools is an award-winning family-run business in Warrington. They sell knitting, needlecraft and sewing materials, and have just started stocking patchwork and quilting supplies! Fred Aldous in the Northern Quarter, has a great range of fabric scissors, sewing machine needles, rotary cutters and even quilting rulers. It also has a good selection of felts and sometimes has a packet of wadding or stuffing, as well as beads and ribbons. And these cute pins! Abakhan in the city centre, has lots of fabric and a few useful crafty bits as well. Check out their lovely collection of fat quarter bundles. Other places in Manchester to buy supplies include: Send me a message if you know of any other great places to get supplies in Manchester. I have recently bought a fabric stash called the Hurricane from Backstitch of 41 wide fat quarters of fabric for £56 pounds. The postage cost was £2.75, which I was very happy to pay for the amount of fabric I ordered, and its lasting ages (I’ve still got loads left!)
