Ready-made curtain panels offer an efficient, quick and painless way to get curtains. They are found in a variety of price ranges, in many different fabric choices and almost unlimited colors. Combine colors for a unique effect, add more panels for a luxurious effect, or position sheers between opaque panels for a combination effect. Calculate the number of panels before shopping to ensure accurate purchasing. Measure the width of the area to cover. For example, if the curtains must hang clear of the window when in the open position, add an additional 25 percent of the window width to the actual window width; use this figure for the width of the area to cover. For example, if the window is 100 inches wide, the curtains should be made to 125 inches wide in order for them to hang off the window when in the open position. For an inside-mount curtain, measure from one edge inside the frame to the inside edge on the opposite side.

Choose the style of the panel to use to determine the fullness of the finished curtain. Fullness is the extra fabric, over and above the actual width of the area to cover, used in the curtain. For example, grommet panels typically are 1.5 to 2 times fullness, gathered rod pocket or pleated curtains typically are 2.5 times fullness, sheers typically are 3 times fullness. Fullness is a personal choice. Consider that the width of panels may be listed as the flat width or the finished width. Typically, grommet and gathered curtains are listed as flat width. Pleated panels usually are listed as the finished width. Multiply the width of the area to cover by the desired curtain fullness; round the number up for the minimum number of panels required. The width of the curtain panel, as listed on the packaging, is the flat width of the panel -- unless the package indicates otherwise. If the package lists the flat panel measurement as 54 inches, and the area to cover is 100 inches at double fullness, divide 200 by 54 for the result of four panels.

If the package indicates finished width, divide the area to cover by the finished width. For example, if the package lists the curtain as finished at 25 inches wide, and the area to cover is 100 inches, 100 divided by 25 equals 4. The treatment needs four panels.
