I think 11 is the new 14. I’ve spoken to a lot of people about this, and we all agree that each succeeding generation grows up quicker.

I’m sure I grew up quicker than my parents because of what the world was like at that time. I don’t think the internet has allowed children to enjoy their youth as much. But then, I might just be getting old and boring. After the kids were born, I used to cry a lot at daft things – really stupid films. I remember I was on a train one time crying at an absolutely gushy movie that I can’t even recall the name of. Having children makes you cry – maybe it’s because your life is over! I was a regular, bouncy, full-of-beans kid. I grew up in that idyllic/nightmarish Seventies period where the neighbours all knew each other. I have memories of boring telly, rainy days, summer holidays at caravan sites… We used to go camping every year for the first two weeks in August. We went to a place called Windy Harbour just outside Blackpool four years in a row. I also remember breaking down on the M6. My bike is one of my most treasured possessions. I had a knee operation [to repair a snapped ligament] which put paid to running, and cycling was actually part of my rehabilitation. I’ve grown to really enjoy it. People of my age are laughingly called MAMILs (middle-aged men in Lycra), but if you play football or rugby or whatever, you get to a certain age and the injuries start to kick in. I remember Sunday night – bath night – as a child and I’d sit there with my mum going through my hair looking for nits while David Attenborough watched gorillas going through each other’s hair looking for nits. It’s changed fundamentally how I live and I get to work in different parts of the world. It’s a really great feeling to exist in a different country for a while and get embedded in the culture while you’re there. I worked in Cape Town and it’s an amazing place. If I were still working as an electrician on a building site, which I did when I was 16, I might not have experienced that. The curtain call can be embarrassing when you’ve not been as good as you should have been… for six weeks! You have to go out at the end and thank the audience for their restrained applause. I admit I have Googled myself, but not for a while. There was nothing I didn’t know already!
