The agency was responding to the protest petition filed by Lakhvinder Kaur, whose husband Badal Singh was killed in the riots. Counsel of the riot victims, senior advocate H S Phoolka, while filing the petition had argued that based on the CBI’s closure report and other documents annexed with the report, Tytler struck a “deal” and paid a “hefty amount” to a riot witness, but the witness went on to depose against him. The CBI also stated “no reliance can be placed” on arms dealer and jailed businessman Abhishek Verma’s statement, which pointed to influencing of witness and hawala transaction. Verma had told the CBI that a “hefty amount” was paid to Surinder Singh Granthi (the witness), besides helping his son Narinder settle abroad. “During 2009, witness Surinder Singh — before his death — had informed Dr Manmohan Singh, the then Prime Minister of India, trial court as well as CBI, that Jagdish Tytler was never involved in the 1984 Sikh riots,” the CBI’s reply added.
