A shiny copper finish might require a little more maintenance than brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze and chrome, but if you let it age naturally, copper will develop a beautiful patina. It’s harder to match accessories and other fixtures to copper, and it’s not as durable as other finishes. But as a sophisticate and a wit, he would probably be pleased with the atmosphere in the latest incarnation of the South Beach hotel bearing his name.

Known years ago as the Lord Balfour, the hotel became the Wave Hotel from 2000 to 2011. After a total renovation, the 64-room hotel reopened last July in its 1940 Art Deco building. The old moniker has returned, but the aesthetic is all new. The hotel eschews trite English décor — club chairs, wood paneling — for brash, colorful, contemporary spaces enlivened by playful details. The lobby sets the tone. Extending from one wall are 24 sculptural hands, each holding a retro-style hand mirror so visitors can admire themselves.

The LocationAbove Fifth Street, fashionable Ocean Drive quickly becomes intolerable Ocean Drive, with cheesy bars and incessant come-ons for $9.95 lunch specials. The Lord Balfour, a true aristocrat, keeps its distance. Just below Fifth Street, the hotel is in a less commercial stretch, a few blocks from the beach entrance. The RoomA radiantly tattooed woman peered slyly from the wall of room 415, a Royal King booked at $199 in October. One entire wall was taken up by a photographic image of her face — wild black hair, electric blue eye shadow.

Silvery tree-stump end tables, a handmade calfskin chair, a wood-plank desk and bamboo flooring added warmth. Special mention goes to the minibar, an oenophile’s delight. The seven half-bottles included a Spanish rioja ($20) and a French rosé ($24).

A flat-screen TV, iPod station and electric iron were tucked around the smallish room. The BathroomA white sculptural hand extended from the wall of the stand-up shower, as if to offer a washcloth and soap. Above the sink, tubes of Etro toiletries — green, purple, red, orange — aligned for a rainbow effect. Complimentary bright orange slippers beckoned from the floor. Room ServiceThere is none. A free continental breakfast is served in the airy lobby and palm-shaded back patio.AmenitiesAnyone desirous of the indulgences afforded by restaurants, full gyms, spas or swimming pools should drop the monogrammed luggage elsewhere, at least for now. (A small fitness area contains a treadmill and elliptical trainer, and a restaurant is in the works.) The drinks at the lobby bar, which specializes in tea-infused cocktails ($12) with names like Piccadilly Circus (rum, green tea, lime juice, mint, soda water), soothe the disappointment. Bottom LineDespite the stylish décor and classy location, the Lord Balfour is low on stuffiness.

During my visit, the clientele was composed mainly of what looked to be upper-middle-class families and couples rather than the jet-setters who frequent the five-star palaces farther up South Beach. If you don’t demand pomp or pampering, Lord Balfour is a charming host.Free Next Day Delivery On Orders Over £100 Placed Before 12pm - UK Mainland Only * Huge Range Available With Over 1.5 Million Items In Stock Gold Trusted Merchant 201698% Service Rating - 98% Product Rating The Richard Haworth UK trade site meets all your hotel linen requirements.
