Comprising a set of Luna-style folk-pop ballads (Carvel, Wednesday's Song, Song to Sing When You're Lonely, Regret), it neither homages his band's funk-pop style nor does it continue the psychiatric journey of his early solo extravaganzas.

A second album followed in the same year, The Will To Death (Record Collection, 2004), a collaboration with percussionist Josh Klinghoffer, was perhaps too much for Frusciante's muse. The 16 songs sound improvised and never refined. In some cases, Frusciante is obviously trying to hide the song's "rough and ready" state with production tricks. In other cases, he didn't even try. No question he has the class and the brain to turn even the most embarrassing idea into an intriguing proposition, but these two albums are, ultimately, yet another testament to the fact that compact discs are too cheap to manufacture. Frusciante released three more albums, for a total of six in six months: Inside Of Emptiness (Record Collection, 2004), DC EP (2004) and Curtains (2005). Ataxia is collaboration with percussionist Josh Klinghoffer and Fugazi's bassist Joe Lally. Their first output, Automatic Writing (Record Collection, 2004), contains five lengthy jams, notably the convoluted and sinister Addition and the bleak and brutal Dust.
