Rosebys opens outlet in Kathmandu Rosebys, a lifestyle retail chain from the UK, opened a branch in Kathmandu on Monday. Rosebys’ showroom on the ground floor of Kathmandu Plaza, Kamaladi stocks a whole range of home fashion and lifestyle accessories. The outlet offers bed sheets, curtains, towels, cushions, vases, frames, lamps, candles and other accessories. According to the showroom owner Nabin Agrawal, all the items have been imported from India. Rosebys has a factory in Gujarat, India. “All the items at the showroom are reasonably priced,” said Agrawal. “The price of bed sheets starts from Rs. 800, the same as in India.” The showroom is offering special discounts on the occasion of Dashain. Rosebys was acquired by India’s Gujarat Heavy Chemicals, a subsidiary of the Dalmia Group in 2006. It started operations in India in 2009, and owns various home decor retail chains including 50 exclusive stores with 20 shop-in-shops in Style-Spa, Debenhams and Home Stop.

Experts predicted that the lead up to this Christmas could be the toughest on the high street since the recession of the early 1980s as shoppers rein in their spending in response to rising household and fuel bills. Nick Bubb, a leading retailing analyst at Pali International, warned: "Even if the Bank of England cuts interest rates, consumers are going to be so nervous about rising unemployment and falling house prices that they will continue to tighten their belts and that is likely to mean that we are going to see the worst Christmas for 30 years. "There tends to be companies that collapse at the start of the New Year once the Christmas money comes in and banks pull the plug because they no longer want to finance them.
This year could be even worse." Research by the respected accountants Grant Thornton disclosed that only one in four retailers had issued a positive trading statement - an update on their recent performance - in the last three months. The number of negative trading statements meanwhile has reached a two year high. David Bush, head of Grant Thornton's retail services team, said: "Profits continue to remain under pressure due to the significant amount of product price discounting needed to entice customers into stores. "This is on top of the other increasing costs that are incurred by retailers such as rental prices, staff salaries and utility costs." Further evidence of retailers struggling came when the furnishings and curtain chain Rosebys collapsed last week. And the furniture retailer MFI was saved from collapse at the eleventh hour. Howard Archer, an economist at Global Insight, predicts that consumer spending will decline even further in the run up to Christmas. He said: "Consumers are facing their most difficult circumstances since the early 90s if not before.
