It’s a street in Del Mar, California. It’s also, more importantly, a collective of people, and a vaguely defined label that takes its name from that California street.

Stratford CT founders Andrew Walker and Chris Davidson have been putting out dreamy future funk since the start of this year, and they’ve already managed to release ten albums, including two label compilations. Following in the space-bass footsteps of net labels like Keats//Collective, 1080p and Business Casual, Stratford CT’s model is to release what it likes, and that often means textured synths, unearthed esoteric funk samples and an aesthetic that’s both nostalgic and futuristic.

A squawking synth rides a heavy bassline, sputtered out by clunking, casual percussion and levels to a smooth, textured ride by the end. If this is what the rest of sounds like, those ten other Stratford CT releases will be in good company. I caught up with Andrew and Chris recently to talk about the ups and downs of running an internet label, their first physical release, joining forces with with Keats//Collective and what’s in store after drops.
oval shower curtain rail argos It started out pretty casually when Chris mentioned he wanted to start making mixes of tracks he liked on SoundCloud. He knew what he wanted to hear, and I could make the mixes happen, so we put our heads together. At this time our good friend Ryan () used to live at the sickest beach house/shack that was right on a central street in downtown Del Mar, Stratford CT. It brought all of us together as a solid crew where music and all sorts of other madness was always underway.

We liked how Stratford CT brought like-minded people together, so we thought it was a great name to make this concept universal to people all over the globe. Would you consider it a label, or just a collective of people? AW: I’d say we are a relaxed label. Me and Chris still make all the decisions and scouting, etc. But we don’t mess with crazy contracts or limit an artist to releases only with us. What parts of running the label do you each handle? AW: I pretty much make the artwork for most releases. I also contribute as an artist myself (Walkie Talkie), and we both are always looking out for new talent. CD: I guess I’ve been kinda managing. I keep artists informed about our goals. We just started releasing physical products a few weeks ago, so I’ve been making sure those get to the people who have ordered. It’s awesome that we are getting orders outside of the U.S. Pretty fucking cool to me. What’s the toughest part of running it?Most of the work is just fun!

I would saying waiting on things is the hardest. CD: Organization and communication. Do you mostly reach out to artists to release music with, or do they come to you? AW: We reach out most the time, but we are getting more and more artists coming to us and asking now. What makes you think, “This is an album we need to put out!”? AW: Mainly if it fits our aesthetic, the artist has a relatively small following on SoundCloud, and when me and Chris agree on those things…then BOOM! Which artists on Stratford CT do you find yourself continually going back to? AW: We have a couple frequent contributors…Winter Inter, Secret Attraction, Shy Wolve, Sloslylove, VentureX, Sazabio, Sovate and ‘Twell. If we keep coming back to them, it’s either because we have a strong relationship with them or we feel the artist needs more attention. You’ve done showcases with Keats//Collective. How did you guys link up? AW: Kind of a long story, but I think I can keep it quick.

I am pretty sure it all started when Dan Bombard (Dinosaurus Rex) hit me up to do a track for I was so stoked! From there I started doing some cover art for them and started to build a relationship. A HUGE thanks to Dan! I think it was my idea to do the showcase together, but basically we share some of the artists we support, so I thought why not combo up our efforts. Dan was down and sent out Pier.Point to rep Keats//Collective. It was an awesome coincidence that Sloslylove who has releases through both Stratford CT and Keats//Collective had a few tour stops in Mexico, which is practically right down our street. So we jumped on the opportunity, asked him and he was down too. Funny thing now is that Chris goes to school in Boulder, Colorado, so he can link up with Dan and check out all the Keats shows. What’re your plans for the next year? Keep on keepin on! Just to do what we do better and more of it. Hopefully more shows, definitely more physical releases. Our first one was VentureX’s on cassette which was really exciting and went really well.
