But the demise of taught crafts like sewing and needlecraft goes even deepe...r. We humans are innately creative. Unless we are very careful, our creativity gets starved out of us as we grow up. We forget how to play with paint; write a story or decorate a cake never mind take a pair of scissors and some beautiful cloth and make something to wear or decorate our homes with. Expressing our creativity is essential for our grown up mental health too. Learning a handicraft or a skill as a child is a bonding experience. I was taught, literally on my grandmother's knee to cross stitch. That was one summer holiday back in the '70's when I stayed with her for a week.

The following year, she taught me crochet. Then we grappled with knitting before going back to embroidery...chain stitched flowers on a table cloth that time. When I was allowed to go to work with Gran (her last job was as a nurse in home for the elderly), she and one of the residents taught me macramé and weaving. Remember those hanging macramé plant holders for Spider plants? The elderly lady who lived in the room at the top of the stairs and I made 5 in one day! I learned so much from my grandmother. She was actually a hopeless knitter, her crochet left a lot to be desired too but in sharing her knowledge with me, in nurturing me through dropped stitches and unpicked rows, we shared something that was ours and ours alone. Her hands wrapped around mine as we spoke aloud our actions, "knit one, purl one..." and she made me feel special. I still love learning how to 'make and do' new things. This year I'm going to learn textile printing and dyeing techniques...Every time I try a new craft, a new technique, I think of my Gran and I'm right back there, sat on her knee hearing her say, "That's right My Dear, That's right.

You're doing really well!". 💜💜💜 Is it Still Important to Teach Children to Sew?Riverside FurnishingsSouthampton, United KingdomAs good as new.
