When hunting for real estate, big windows that let the light pour in should be at the top of the checklist. But, come moving day, covering those big windows becomes a tricky task. To help navigate us this curtain conundrum, our resident interior design expert and editor-at-large Estee Stanley gave us some valuable advice.
The biggest decision is the first: Drapes or shades? "I like drapes," says Stanley. "I feel like they make a room look more finished. Although her preference is clear, Stanley suggests roman shades for smaller windows, bay windows, or by a bed. To master the art of the drape, though, follow these guidelines:terracotta grommet drapes There are myriad ways to finish the top and bottom of a drape, and Stanley suggests going French for both. curtain for sale sulit"I like a French pleat. gro jolly curtainsIt just makes drapes a little fuller." beige priscilla curtainsAlso called a pinch pleat, this is a way of gathering the fabric at the top of the drape so it looks as though it has been evenly pinched together.
"But, I'm more traditional. So if it's a modern house it should just be a flat drape with no pleat." And for the bottom of the drape Stanley says, "I like a French seam at the hem so there is no visible stitching." , From $210, Restoration Hardware , From $153, Smith + Noble , From $379, Restoration Hardware When it comes to hanging your drapes, Stanley suggests going "as high as you possibly can." Doing so will give the illusion your windows are larger and your ceilings higher. "I usually do it an inch or two from the ceiling," she says. And although hemming your drapes to be longer and puddle on the floor can feel luxurious, "I like it to just kiss," she says. , From $59, West Elm , From $99, Pottery Barn , From $128, Anthropologie A drape is only as beautiful as it is functional. Stanley suggests using curtain hooks that attach the back of the pleat to the curtain rod. But, if you're a pleat-less modernist, a metal grommet can be used. For opening and closing she says, "I like to do a ball bearing chain, so there isn't a string hanging down."
, From $89, West Elm , Price Upon Request, Gretchen Everett The kind of material used for a drape can dictate how formal a room is. A silk drape, for example, will make a room feel much fancier than a linen drape. In general, "I think linens and wools are nice," she says. If the window gets a lot of light, line the drapes with a sun-safe material to prevent sun rot and fading. Stanley suggests blackout-lining your drapes if you "need to sleep and feel like you're in a Vegas hotel. But, if not, than don't waste the money." , $40, West Elm , From $29, West Elm When it comes to pattern, Stanley steers clear. "I think people have so many windows in their houses, you want to accentuate them in a way that almost makes them go away." Patterned drapes can make a big statement, but Stanley says keeping the pattern on drapes simple "makes them a beautiful backdrop for a room." , From $90, Crate & Barrel , From $80, Crate & Barrel , From $188, Anthropologie

Name: George and Sara AyeLocation: Logan Square, ChicagoSize: 1300 square feetYears lived in: 1.5
George and Sara are a very creative Chicago couple. He is a creative director and she is a design researcher. In addition to their full-time work, they teach design innovation at the School of the Art Institute, and run a small travel apparel company called Hubwear. We love it when people are passionate about design. And, from what we've heard, they are just as passionate about each other as they are about design - just check out this really wonderful video of George's proposal to Sara. Talk about putting your creative side to good use! My/Our style: Mid-century modern mixed with whatever style you'd call CB2 Inspiration: We read the Apartment Therapy book and decided that we wanted our new home to be hip, warm, clean, bright and purposeful. George brings the hip, Sara brings the warm and together we work out the rest. Favorite Element: The view. We adore Logan Boulevard and the second floor vantage point makes it feel like a treehouse. Also the dark wood floors, they were love at first sight.
Biggest Challenge: We gave up TV a few years ago, when we realized that Netflix had everything we needed. So we wanted to optimize our living room for movie-viewing, but this actually left us with no obvious way to arrange the space. We drew multiple configurations of couch, projector and screen before finding the current solution. The screen pulls down into action, making the area feel like its own little theater, and rolls up and out of the way when it's not in use, contributing to a sense of openness. What Friends Say: They love the open layout of the front room, and they are usually impressed by the ridiculously large projector screen. They are also curious to see the Hubwear workroom, where we make our t-shirts. Biggest Embarrassment: There is nothing on the wall above the bed. We haven't found the perfect thing, so we've left it blank. But we have a feeling it might remain blank for a while, and it just feels incomplete. Proudest DIY: Sara - painting every room in the house, with little assistance and no blue tape.
George - laying the Astroturf on the front porch. Biggest Indulgence: Our bed. George's mom gave us a bed budget as a wedding present, so we found a memory foam mattress (Room and Board), a tufted bedframe (Crate and Barrel), and a lovely duvet cover (Amenity). The pillows, sheets and duvet itself are also extremely soft and dream-producing. Best advice: Set a reasonable housewarming date when you move in. We gave ourselves 3 months to paint, buy furniture and generally get the house worked out, and after the housewarming party, we really relaxed. We've only made minor changes since then - we really declared our place "done" and resolved to love it as-is. Dream source: A little shop called Found, in Powell, Ohio.
