Regeneration of one of London's most famous streetsI'm not one of those people who finds shopping stressful. In fact, I shop to relieve stress.
And I know what I like. Or at least, I know what I definitely don't like: bootcut jeans, square toe black boots and bodycon make me a little queasy.pinch pleat curtains using buckram However, a little change never hurt anyone, and who better to help me breathe fresh air into my wardrobe than one of the army of personal shoppers now taking over Britain's high street?lined voile curtains 84 drop Once the preserve of only the very poshest department stores, personal shopping has proven so effective for retailers that now many high street shops are offering the service, and while I feel some trepidation at the prospect of personal shoppers descending on me with armfuls of ruffles and less, I'm willing to give it a go.curtains for daf xf 105
Could an in-store stylist help me rethink my wardrobe and revolutionise the way I buy clothes?faux silk curtains homebase Shopping is shopping and there was free coffee on offer, so I prepared to step behind the velvet curtain.bhv curtains 1. House of Fraserargos red poppy curtains First up, a two-hour appointment with Thiaba, who's been a personal shopper at House of Fraser on Oxford Street for eight years.mylo curtains She took me into her inner sanctum - a private room with lots of soothing dark wood, white candles, coffee table books and, most importantly, vast changing room space (no sweaty cubicles here). I wanted three outfits - casual, work and going out - that would work for AW16.
I gave my sizes and listed some of my favourite brands. Armed with these bare bones, yet remarkably unfazed, Thiaba left me in the room for 20 minutes while she did a sweep of the shop floor. I'd barely had time to tweet some pics of me lying in the giant changing room before she was back - with two jam-packed rails, shoe boxes, scarves and what looked suspiciously like a fedora. Studiously ignoring the fedora and any doubts, I headed into the changing room. Ted Baker Deliah jacket, £219, Hall Huber Self-tie blouse, £99, Whistles Sadie trousers, £95, Karen Millen peep toe, £130. I was a long way from my comfort zone. I don't wear an awful lot of tailoring and, if I do, it's greys and blacks in more relaxed cuts. That said, I would probably wear the blouse with the trousers (although I'd get a slimmer, more cropped fit, or maybe culottes, with a pointy-toe heel). Whistles faux-fur cocoon coat, £275, Whistles beaded cropped sweater, £120, Ted Baker Dariaa skinny jeans, £99, Karen Millen peep toe, £130.
This was more me. The coat was very me and irresistibly soft. In fact, it was hard to take the coat off, but, eventually, Thiaba made me. Therapy Bee cami, £25, Whistles Kitty skirt, £140, Oasis Ava leather jacket, £158, Karen Millen suede boots, £190. Velvet is hot right now. The skirt was so pretty and the cami and leather jacket were simple, yet still edgy. While the velvet ankle boot is the statement shoe of AW16, I would probably opt for a simple black strappy sandal as the skirt was so delicate. Thiaba also suggested adding a black polo neck instead of the cami for a day to night look. Stefanel wool coat, £295, cashmere scarf, £200, boat neck sweater, £100, grey cropped trousers, £200 (available in store), Ash python leather trainers (available in store), £58. This tonal outfit was my favourite (obviously, do you see all the cashmere?) The price was the only (albeit pretty significant) stumbling point, but you could easily recreate the look with less expensive pieces.
I was starting to grasp the appeal of personal shopping - it's really useful for getting ideas and experimenting. Bear in mind too that the session is completely free and there's no obligation to buy. Oh, and I tried the fedora. I kind of liked it. The Debenhams service, too, is completely free. My personal stylist was Geri, who's been at the flagship Oxford Street branch for three years. She started by assessing my body shape - slender hourglass apparently, despite my longheld belief I'm an apple (turns out, that's just the carbs). She then asked about my lifestyle and favourite brands before leaving me with a giant cup of coffee. Before I knew it, I was in another massive changing room wrestling with a sliver of gold lamé. Star Bubble top, £40, Savannah Miller Nine super skinny coated jean, £45, Faith Freya shoe, £59.
I liked the 70s vibes of this top, although I probably wouldn't go for the statement necklace as well. I was definitely a fan of the skinny leather-look jeans. If I was going to the pub, I'd just wear those with some white trainers and a statement sweatshirt. Butterfly by Matthew Williamson dress, £250 I can see how lots of people would love this party dress. I definitely liked it better on than when I saw it on the hanger, but I'm just not a huge fan of florals.By Henry Holland black and gold printed jumper, £32, Savannah Miller Nine super skinny jean, £45, Star animal print coat, £84, Faith Bethany boot, £79 (available in-store). As a journalist, I don't really do suits (more a 'jeans, scratch-and-sniff sweater, bedhead' aesthetic.) So, Geri selected a smart/cas outfit for me. I really liked the Henry Holland jumper and I do love a bit of leopard print (must be the Lynch in me). Star regimental jacket, £79, Savannah Miller Nine plain cami, £18.50 (available in-store), Savannah Miller Nine super skinny coated jean, £45, Faith Bari boot, £59.
Designers like Burberry and Prada showcased military coats for autumn and this high street take, with its thick velvet cuffs, is bang on. During the day at work, you could wear it with a chunky knit and dark jeans, replacing it with a delicate cami for evening. Red Herring dark read bomber, £45, Red Herring mom jean, £30, Faith Deli platforms, £55, Red Herring Bardot striped top, £22. It was nice to finally get away from skinny jeans (fashion people may have declared the skinny officially over but no one bothered to tell the high street). I also loved the chunky burgundy bomber. But I would opt for a white trainer rather than heels, especially for cold autumn days. That's the thing with personal shopping - you may not love all the styling and all the pieces, but they'll find things you would never think to try yourself, show you how to wear them and give you time and space to try it all on. Also, at midday, the cup of coffee magically turns into a glass of Prosecco.
MORE: I HAD MAKEOVERS AT FIVE DIFFERENT MAKEUP COUNTERS AND THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED 3. Marks and Spencer M&S don't have in-store personal shoppers, but it's just launched Try Tuesday - an online service that pairs you with a personal stylist. The service is free, but only for Sparks card holders. After creating an online profile and answering a series of questions about what I was looking for, my personal style and my sizes, I was matched with Jodie Norbury, Senior Stylist. She assured me via email that she was a real person and would put together some outfits for me to view 'in a few days'. Three days later, Jodie emailed over her suggestions with accompanying style notes (it's really in-depth). You leave feedback on each item and Jodie will go back and suggest alternatives until you get what you want. You can then go through to order them online, with an option to get them delivered to a store, free of charge, to try. Collared neck overcoat, £69, Cotton blend white shirt, £39.50, Tapered wool silk trouser, £39.50, Fisherman tank with wool, £19.50, Leather lace up brogue shoes, £165.
This is exactly the type of outfit I would wear to work - the tailored trousers are given a little edge with the metallic brogues (love a metallic shoe!) The oversized shirt is also great for layering - under a tailored leopard print overcoat for example. Faux-fur hooded jacket, £79, Pure wool polo neck, £32.50, Slim leg jeans, £35, Suede lace-up trainers, £99. This casual outfit is all about the puffa, another key AW16 staple seen everywhere on the catwalks, including over eveningwear. With a super-soft lining on the inside, the jacket was really cosy. Fit and flare velvet dress, £39.50, Wool polo neck, £39.50, Pointed court shoes, £29.50. This velvet yellow dress is inspired by that Valentino Fall 2016 dress you've seen in every single magazine recently. Either wear it over a polo neck for extra style points (and y'know warmth) or on its own with metallic heels. At just under £40, this one's worth snapping up sooner rather than later. The M&S service was definitely more for serious shoppers as you do need to purchase the clothes to try them, but it's great for people who don't want the faff of a two-hour appointment in town.
