A friend had given me a couple cloth pads to try and it was just enough to get me curious about cloth. I was planning to pay her to make more for me, but being a little impulsive when it comes to all things creative, I decided to dust off my 20 year old sewing machine and make my own. How delighted I was to find that the fabrics I wanted to use were HALF PRICE at the local Fabricland, and not only were they half price, our income tax return had just come in! I heedlessly raced up and down isles, pulling out gorgeous prints, foxy flannels, and giggled to myself at what a stash I would have. My husband was not so delighted when he found out how much I had spent, however being the loving man that he is, he stepped back and let me have my creative leeway. ome worked, some didn't. I'm sure a few of my friends got tired of hearing "hey, are you bleeding soon? I have a new pad for you to try...." So after some trial and error for the shape, I found one that worked and went to town! Whookless mystery fabric shower curtain brownithin a week I had a beautiful pile of several dozen pads (if not a hundred +) and was super pleased with myself. My husband (not sure why he's the voice of reason because sometimes his ideas are more hair brained than mine), innocently asked "Do you need that many pads? I mean, do you bleed that much?" U So I thought I would see if there were any people interested on the local shop and swap page. AND just before I posted, one of my experimenters informed me that her pads had shrunk about a 1/2". Pne more error: I hadn't pre washed the fabric. There was also the business of a business name! My friend and I brainstormed for almost 2 weeks to find a name that sounded nice, didn't target a specific market (ie mama cloth), and above all was available on Etsy and Facebook. T
here were a few we loved, but taken, some that weren't taken but just wrong (ummmm moon glow?) and finally FemmeCloths. It wasn't one both of us were super keen on, but after a few days it grew on me until I realized that that was my business name! rom the moment I posted, I have not stopped. What I have posted on Etsy is a small amount compared to what I have available at the local farmers market. I have so many repeat customers, and wonderful testimonies of women who have been helped and healed by switching to cloth pads. (You can find some of these on my facebook page) As exciting as it is to have my own business as I stay at home to raise our child, I am more gratified by the intangible rewards of making our monthlies a little more pretty, healthy, and normal.
