Our young actors will bring puppets to life through movement, voice, and characterization.  Campers will explore storytelling and make puppets of their very own as they discover the art and craft of puppetry in America and throughout the world.  The camp will culminate in a puppet show of the campers own creation! An introduction into the world of musical theatre, Midsummer Musical will focus on singing, dancing, and acting our way through some of the world’s greatest musicals such as Beauty and the Beast, Annie, Singin’ in the Rain,and Mary Poppins. Sharpen skills like ensemble acting, playwriting, character development, and script analysis in the zany world of the Wayside School, where teachers can turn students into apples, raincoats can talk, and there are a bunch of boys named Eric.  The camp will culminate in an original short play based on the campers’ favorite tales from Wayside School. Commedia dell’Arte is a form of theater that began in Italy in the 16th century, and is the basis of the art of improvisation.  Based on the creation of specific “types” of characters, young actors will learn to make big acting choices through stylized movement, characterization, and improv.  Big emotions, big characters, big fun! Musical Theatre Cabaret students will create and perform in a themed Cabaret - which will perform at the end-of-week showcase.

Ensemble songs, duets & trios, solos, dances and skits will be compiled into a 30-minute performance piece that will be designed to highlight each student as they work on developing their performance skills. Based on two of the greatest works in children’s literature, this fast-paced and witty show is set in  Wonderland’s courtroom, where Alice is on trial.  The Queen of Hearts is the judge, the Mad Hatter,  White Rabbit, and Caterpillar are witnesses, and the jury is a deck of cards!  Poor Alice must try to prove  her innocence by re-living the events of the adventures we’ve all come to love.  Both helping and hindering her are Tweedledee and Tweedledum, who spend most of  their time trying to decide who is the attorney for the defense and who for the prosecution.  To win the  case and save her head, Alice must embrace the truth about who she is and be willing to wake up from  the dream of Wonderland. Part class, part production process, this new offering to the SCT Deegan  Children’s Theatre Summer Program is an opportunity for teens to dive headfirst into the world of history’s greatest playwright:  William Shakespeare.
