A serious mouse infestation and the contamination of food has forced Tesco to shut down a flagship London store. The outlet in the prestigious Covent Garden area was closed on Monday evening on the orders of the local council and remained shut throughout yesterday.Substandard maintenance of routine cleaning and inadequate mice prevention measures were also flagged in the closure notice posted outside the shop. Troubling times: The Covent Garden Tesco Metro branch was closed on Monday The Tesco Metro store is normally extremely popular with both local office workers and tourists. One customer, Barry Hughes, a law student who regularly buys food from the premises, said: ‘It really is hard to believe that a major retailer like Tesco can suffer such a serious infestation that the shop has to be closed down, he said.‘This must have been going on for some time.

Council environmental health officers don’t shut down a store without very good reason.’ Mr Hughes, aged 35, who lives nearby, said: ‘I often buy food in there. One of my flatmates is extremely ill at the moment. We don’t know if there is any link, but it makes you think.‘It is truly shocking for a company like Tesco to find itself in this position.’ Fellow shopper, Rui Da Silva, said: ‘As a long standing customer, I was shocked to learn that a retailer that I trusted can't even set a mouse trap.'I've been ill a couple of times this month due to food, and am seriously beginning to wonder whether I can trust Tesco any more.’Mr Hughes said quite a crowd had gathered around the store yesterday afternoon to read a notice which spelt out the reason for the shop's closure. The order posted by Westminster City Council on the outlet in Bedford Street stated the closure was: ‘Because of a serious live infestation of mice throughout the premises, poor maintenance of routine cleaning, inadequate proofing against mice and direct contamination of food items.’James Armitage, Westminster Council's food health and safety manager, added: ‘We treat the big retail companies with exactly the same approach as small high street traders - where public health is of concern

, our action is swift and decisive.‘We can confirm that a serious mouse infestation and dirty conditions were found at the Tesco Metro in Covent Garden and we have closed the premises down until a thorough clean-up has taken place and proper pest control measures have been taken.‘The council is working with the supermarket chain to establish a timetable for the work to take place.’A Tesco spokesman apologised to customers and said urgent steps were being taken to deal with the problem. He said: ‘We insist on the highest standards of hygiene in our stores and are extremely concerned by this incident, which we are confident was isolated. The shop closure is the latest embarrassment for Britain’s biggest and richest retailer which has seen its market share fall in recent months despite a massive shop opening programme.A poor Christmas brought a profit warning and wiped some £5billion off its share price.Figures published yesterday showed Tesco’s market share has fallen from 30.6per cent a year ago to 30.2per cent despite a heavy push for its ‘Big Price Drop’ promotion.

By contrast, the market share of its biggest rival, Asda, rose from 17.3per cent a year ago to an all-time high of 17.9 per cent.Clearance - Hurry limited stock There are now two ways to find our clearance stock.
