Kathleen Parker: Nation’s bad mood stoked by Internet and politicos Four Arts speaker says citizens ‘incited to anger’ and ‘no one is better at that than Donald Trump’ Posted: 12:55 p.m. Wednesday, February 03, 2016 The national mood isn’t pretty.“Everybody’s mad,” Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker told the audience Tuesday at The Society of the Four Arts. “Let me put it this way,” she said.

“We live in strange times.”The Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, who describes herself as slightly right of center, said there are legitimate reasons why conservatives are upset, ranging from their dislike of Obamacare to the dwindling middle class. The country has been suffering from growing anxiety and distrust since 9/11, and that feeling has been amplified by subsequent terrorist atrocities, she said. But beyond that, “people are being incited to anger,” and the media and opportunistic politicians are fanning the flames. “No one is better at that than Donald Trump,” she said. The “old media,” such as newspapers and television news, deserve some of the blame for the nation’s sour mood, but “we really do have standards,” she said. The “new media,” meaning social media and the proliferation of news shows featuring self-serving pundits, are far more responsible, she said. The democratization of media, the ability to disseminate misinformation anonymously, the rise of the punditocracy and information overload are stoking the nation’s anger, Parker said.“

We have liberated the id,” she said. “We have set loose on the landscape the national id without the influence of the ego or superego.”Now anyone with a cellphone is a one-person media outlet, and with 40 percent of the world’s population connected to the Internet, misinformation can spread very quickly, she said.As for the ability to remain anonymous online, “I can’t think of a more destructive social force than the ability to say anything you want about anyone and not be held accountable,” she said. The pundits don’t aim to educate the public or clarify the issues, she said. “Nobody answers the questions. They have something they know would be quotable and know would be put on the website or tweeted by the producer behind the curtain. They’ve got the buzz, baby. That’s what it’s all about.”The deluge of information also disturbs people, who feel powerless to digest it, she said. Google head Eric Schmidt has estimated that humanity produced 5 exabytes of data from the dawn of civilization to 2003.
