The term originally referred to patterned calico produced in India during the 17th century, often hand-painted with flowering tree patterns and glazed, giving it a slight sheen, like silk. Bold new look: The Peoneden Helmsley sofa in ochre by House of Hackney is a zesty take on the styleThese lengths of cloth were highly detailed, with vases, lotus flowers, animals, birds and leafy borders, and were used exclusively for furnishings and bed covers, known as palampores. The diarist Samuel Pepys bought a bolt of painted Indian calico chintz for his wife 'for to line her new study which is very pretty'.But it wasn't until the 18th and 19th centuries that the fabric really gained popularity in Europe, when India became the greatest exporter of textiles in the world. Now the style is a catch-all for vintage-looking florals, and looks as good on our walls as it does in our wardrobes. When it comes to interiors, chintz has historically been associated with a specific sort of English home. 'Chintz denotes country house comfort', says Janie Money, interior designer for Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler.

Classic design: The serene Bowood print by Colefax and Fowler was first printed in 1938The company, Colefax and Fowler, set up in 1938 by John Fowler and Lady Colefax, remains the go-to place for traditional chintz. Designs from its classic collection — such as the attractive rose print Bowood, which has been in production since 1938 — are still available. The pale grey and sage green colour way would make a serene pair of curtains. John Fowler adored chintz because he wanted 'the garden to spill into his rooms'. And Lady Colefax believed the patterned fabric was an essential companion to elegant furniture. But they used it sparingly.According to interior designer and biographer Martin Wood, author of John Fowler, Prince Of Decorators, chintz was employed on projects such as 18th-century Radbourne Hall, in Derbyshire, as an accent — on cushions or the odd chair covering — rather than an overall scheme. 'The trick is less is more', says Mr Wood. 'Don't go mad with it like they did in the Eighties.'

Traditional English: Gentile prints by Jean Monro taken from archived designs. Left, Hydrangea and Rose in Blue/GreenJean Monro offers a collection of replica English chintzes produced from archived designs. While Fowler's projects were grand — he worked for the Astors, made over the palladian mansion Bletchington Park and one of his last projects was Chequers, the country house of the Prime Minister — his style was known for its humble elegance. In rather the same way, chintz needn't be consigned to smart country retreats. It can work in an ordinary modern setting, too. 'Chintz can be an excellent counterbalance when used, say, on a very modern stylised chair that has very strict lines,' says Janie Money.Crawling beneath a verdant patterned bed cover, in an otherwise white room, has appeal, and using botanical prints for curtains would give a sense of the outdoors or even frame a garden view. 'Incorporating chintz into a modern home can be done subtly, by adding a few floral cushions to complement a more neutral backdrop, or as a bold statement wall,' says Alison Gee, head designer of Morris & Co.If you are seeking inspiration, Brodsworth Hall, in South Yorkshire, is a good place to start.
