Using fabrics is such an easy way to add French style to your home. I have used many "French" looking fabrics and some actual French fabrics throughout my home such as toile, ticking, grain sacks and even checks. This is vintage French ticking on this pillow in the dining room which is one of a pair I purchased. This one and the one above were both made by Ann of On Sutton Place. I just shared this guest room last week that has several French looking fabrics. The red plaid pillow in the front is from France. Buffalo checks and more grain sack pillows in the sun room. This was how it looked around July 4th. Of course it has been updated again and will be shared soon. Now, be sure to go check out the following gals' French fabrics. Did you miss any of the past posts in this series? April: Creating French Country Style with Collections May: Vintage French Items June: French Countryside DiningHave you ever seen an ugly, worn french chair at a flea market, estate sale, or thrift store, and walked right past it, not giving it a second look?
However, if it’s a french chair, I always give even the ugliest ones a thorough inspection. Sometimes, if the “bones” are good, all the chair will need is some new clothes. Such is the case with this antique french bergere chair. I found it at one of my favorite estate sales many months ago, and she was sadly neglected with rips, fraying, and staining to the old fabric. There was even a huge stain on the back that someone had covered with an old crocheted doily in an effort to cover it up. The frame was in pretty good shape though, and was painted a creamy off white with natural distressing from years of use. And….it was only $38.00! After checking the springs to make sure they were still in good shape, I decided that she would be perfect for a little makeover. Hubby thought I was nuts when told him that I wanted it, but I know what bergere chairs sell for, and knew that she would be gorgeous with just a little bit of love. I used a beautiful toile fabric from Hobby Lobby that has perfect shades of blue in it, as well as images of precious sheep {a weakness of mine}, to upholster the inside back and sides.
I also used an antique German grain sack for the exterior sides, back, and arms, and an upholstery grade burlap {that I love} for the bottom section under the cushion. I wanted to make a slipcover for the cushion so that I could take it off and wash it when needed and loved the idea of using an old white quilt. I just happened to have a large antique quilt that belonged to Evelyn {my sweet mother in law} that was in terrible condition with rips and tears, but was in a beautiful shade of white. tinkerbell shower curtain targetI had been saving it for awhile thinking I would find something to use it for, and decided this was the perfect project.matilda curtains from ikea I finished it off with nail head trim all around. curtains singapore renotalk
I left the finish as found because I loved the timeworn look that it had. So the next time you’re at an estate sale, flea market, or thrift store and you see an ugly french chair…..take a second look…and imagine it with new clothes. You could use boyish, fun fabric I may have overdone it a little with nesting this last week, but I sure did have fun! For a couple of months I had been seeing an old and ugly, but potentially very cute, chair at the thrift store. It was in desperate need of some tlc, and I knew I didn't have the energy for it. Plus, we didn't really need another chair. Then I eventually realized that we will be one chair short at Thanksgiving. That was just the excuse I needed! The chair was free, so the price was perfect. Will said that I could have it, and that he would help me with my project. Here is the old chair before. It was just a little wobbly. Thankfully, the thrift store also had wood glue - for free!
