Four years ago, when it looked like it might disappear from our city and our lives for good, there was shock, disbelief and dismay. TJ's had not just been an important part of London Road life, but an important part of Liverpool life for 99 years – and people found it difficult to contemplate the passing of a family friend. But while many of the company’s stores did close, London Road lived on – and this week, TJ's has been able to spread the good news that three new stores around the country, including one in Bootle (one of the stores that closed following the 2011 collapse) are set to be opened – creating around 150 full and part-time jobs.

This will take the number of TJ's stores up to 17 with owner Anil Juneja looking to eventually increase it to 60 – three more than the number of outlets pre-administration. But what makes TJ's so special? I went behind the scenes to spend time with some of the people who should know best – those who have devoted many years of their lives to the company. One of the first things you notice when walking around TJ's is that there is no off-putting odour which you find elsewhere – no stifling stench of corporate conformity in the air. TJ's is its own little – or quite large – world. TJ's is about individuality. “It’s iconic – part of Liverpool’s history,” says store manager Ian Ross. And it’s a big chunk of Ian’s history, too, as he began working here as a 16-year-old Saturday boy 35 years ago. “When you think of Liverpool you think of TJ's. Whole families have shopped and worked here over the years. My three sisters have all worked at TJ's. One of them – Ruth Keir – left in February after 46 years here.

“It’s not seen as being just another store. People feel a loyalty towards it. Then there’s its location – it’s the heart and soul of London Road. A lot of other businesses in the area survive because of the people who come to shop in TJ's.” There is one particular four letter word which fills the air in TJ's – overhead “SALE” signs are here, there and everywhere. And according to marketing manager Kim Beattie, who has worked here for 23 years, more and more people are now looking for value for money and low prices in austerity Britain. She says: “The likes of Aldi and Lidl have helped take the snobbery out of shopping. People of all backgrounds shop in those supermarkets now, and whereas some people might once not have wanted to be seen with a TJ's bag they are now proud to say ‘Look at these branded goods I got at TJ's and how much I paid’. People are quite open to saving money now, and they say ‘Why pay more?’” Asked what they like most about their jobs, Ian says: “No two days are the same” – while Kim reveals: “People who come to work in the head office here always say ‘Isn’t everyone friendly?’

There’s no corporate atmosphere.” Kevin Ditchfield, sales manager in menswear, has been at TJ's since starting as a 17-year-old Saturday boy 11 years ago, and says: “There’s something for everyone here – and at an affordable price. TJ's doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. We are what we are – selling big brands at cheap prices. People know what they are getting.” That certainly seems true of loyal customers like Barbara Curran, from West Derby, and Norah Threadgold, from Woolton – strangers who we found deep in conversation about TJ's. Barbara says: “It’s a landmark in the city and you always manage to pick something up that you want. I’ve been shopping here for a long time, and my mum worked in the restaurant here many years ago. “It’s a nice store to walk around – it’s never chaotic.” Norah says: “You can look for bargains here – and we all want bargains, don’t we? And there is a lot more choice than in many other stores. “I think it’s very important to the area – I couldn’t see many people coming to London Road to shop if TJ's wasn’t here.”

Team leader Vicki Long, who began as a Christmas temp at TJ's six years ago (it seems like once they’re through the door no one can leave the place), agrees about its importance to the area, saying: “I think London Road would have gone under if TJ's had closed down in 2011. It was quite a devastating time – in fact, we still get people coming in who say ‘I didn’t know you were still open’! But it was great to hear the company is expanding and opening new stores, because it makes you feel safe!” Vicki’s colleague, Karen Ryan, a part-time assistant on the perfume counter who has been at TJ's for 19 years, says: “It was scary when it looked like it was going to close, because we all get on so well here – it’s like a big family, because so many people have worked here for a long time. But it’s great that we are moving forward and opening new stores. I only work here two days a week but I love it, and I love the people who work here. And I spend all my wages here, too!
