As North East audiences continue to have their breath taken away by the brilliance of Billy Elliot the Musical, a sell-out London crowd helped celebrate the show’s phenomenal West End success on Saturday night as the curtain came down on 11 years at the Victoria Palace Theatre. A very special final performance saw Sir Elton John, who wrote the music, Newcastle writer Lee Hall (book and lyrics) and director Stephen Daldry take to the stage with many members of the cast who have told Billy’s inspirational story since the Bafta Award-winning film about an Easington lad who pursues his dream of ballet dancing against the brutal backdrop of the 1984/5 miners’ strike, was adapted for the stage. Based on the award-winning film directed by Stephen Daldry, the show has won more than 80 international awards since its London premiere in 2005, grossing 800 million US dollars internationally in the process.

The cast have gone on to perform at Buckingham Palace and the White House, and were invited to visit Downing Street in 2011, where they met with David Cameron . Lee added that he was looking forward to seeing the show in the North East - the touring production opened at Sunderland Empire last week and will be there until April 30.
