And as it’s significantly cheaper in the so-called ‘off season’, you should seriously think about a winter visit to New York. The chilly wind is a perfect excuse to explore Manhattan beyond Times Square. A tour of Grand Central Terminal is a fascinating way to spend an hour, taking in its striking architecture and history – from the birth of the American railway, through its post-war decline to its 1990s renovation and the glimmering glory it enjoys today. If you’re in the mood for culture, the Whitney Museum of American Art boasts five floors of contemporary paintings and sculpture, including a striking series of outdoor galleries where the artworks do their best to compete with an incredible view of the Lower West Side.

A walk through Manhattan’s newest park – the High Line – is a great way to see the city. It is built on an elevated railway track disused since the 1980s and runs for a mile and a half along the island’s west side. If you’re after a night out to remember, New York’s Lincoln Centre hosts the ­Metropolitan Opera, one of the most ­celebrated companies in the world with a reputation for eye-popping productions featuring lavish sets and costumes. There’s no need to worry that you’ll get lost in the Italian language, as the optional subtitles screened on the seat backs will keep you up to speed with what’s happening. And why not make a night of it with a dinner and performance ticket package? Fine food is served in the theatre’s Grand Tier Restaurant which boasts stunning views of the Plaza outside. Courses are perfectly timed so you won’t miss the curtain, and they even serve dessert in the interval. The St Cloud bar at the Knickerbocker Hotel offers a unique, top-down view of Times Square – if you can handle the chill. If it’s your first time in NYC, you’ll no doubt want to see a few of the traditional sights and a CityPASS is great value. It gets you access to six of a choice of nine top sights, including Top of the Rock and the Empire State Building. A trip up the Empire State is absolutely unmissable, but if time is at a premium go as early as possible on a Sunday morning – you’ll save hours by getting ahead of the queues. Obviously in a cold New York winter, indoor attractions appeal, and the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens, is a great place for kids and adults alike. It takes visitors on an interactive journey through the history and art of film-making, and displays props and costumes from Star Wars, Mrs Doubtfire, The Mask and dozens more classic movies. A new permanent exhibit ­dedicated to Muppets creator Jim Henson opens soon. If you’re looking for a New York experience on a Magaluf budget, Norwegian airline is your friend. Its flights to JFK from Gatwick can cost as little as £149 each way, but the transatlantic service feels anything but low cost.

Its fleet of jetlag-busting Boeing 787 Dreamliners are shiny, new and filled with gadgets. Drinks and snacks can be ordered through the touchscreen tablet which also shows a decent selection of movies. The seats are comfortable, even in economy, with a little more legroom than you’d expect on a budget flight. The premium economy section isn’t quite business class, but it’s got all the vital stuff – more legroom, seats that recline enough to get some sleep, with food and drink included. New York has hundreds of hotels, but it’s well worth straying beyond the usual chains for something a little more interesting. At one end of the scale is the Roger Smith Hotel, a quirky boutique property in the heart of Manhattan. The friendly staff give it a really personal touch – and that even extends to the rooms. They are all decorated in a different style, and feature a hand-picked library of books on the shelves. The Yotel is just a few blocks from Times Square and couldn’t be more different.
