I learnt on it and then my daughter Mafi [Mafi’iolani] learnt on it. A few famous people have played it, but for me the most special thing was watching my daughter learn to read music and play. I found her in a junk shop in St Kilda about 20 years ago. The lady running the shop said she wasn’t for sale because she really liked her and wanted to keep her. I really love it. I like the way we can use each other’s talents. Mafi wanted a dog so we went along to the Lost Dogs Home. There was this little Pomeranian going yap, yap, yap and Mafi went for it first. I just couldn’t put up with that barking and I saw Angel sitting there and said, ‘What about this one?’ She is nearly 15 now and she’s just a terrific dog. I just love shells, maybe it is being part islander. I found this big shell lampshade hiding in the back of a junk shop in Northcote. When my cousin saw it she laughed and laughed. Apparently my aunty has one exactly the same hanging at home in Tonga. This is my mum’s. Every time she comes to town she takes everything out, polishes and puts it all back again. There are pieces in there for me, for (sister) Linda and the grandchildren. It is a big responsibility looking after it. We can’t play football in the loungeroom. I gave (artist) Mark Schaller tickets to the Etta show (At Last – The Etta James Story in 2013) and he turned up the very next day with this beautiful peacock bowl.
