Sure, there would be natural springs and creeks and lakes, but not the deep, blue, briny, salty, sandy, wave-crashing sea I feel in my soul. I knew I needed to somehow bring it with me, and though I decided against grabbing this horshoe crab from Wagon Hill on my last and final trip with Dante, lo and behold it turns out my longtime favorite nautical-themed print, below, is by Austin-based designers Daniella and Sandrine of Monorail Studio.

So, when we arrived at our adorable little (lemon of an) Austin ranch house, the bathroom was already painted in hues of blue just begging for a nautical theme. I fell in love with this gorgeous shower curtain from Anthropologie that hit the style mark exactly between an antique and a modern wood block design (and kind of reminded me of the packaging on Brooklyn-based Mast Brothers Chocolate), but there was no way I was in my right mind going to pay $150 for a shower curtain.blackout eyelet curtains 90x72 The print made me start thinking about Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, which then made me think about trendy octopus designs, so over to Etsy and Modcloth I went looking for alternatives. shower curtain pole argosEtsy’s handmade options skewed a little too kitschy for me, but Modcloth had the perfect option with this Swell Acquainted shower curtain — for a third of the price.sidelight curtains at target

Sadly, Ginger balked at even $50 for a shower curtain, so I tabled the idea for a bit. While meandering through the maze that is the IKEA Marketplace, I started pondering whether or not I could make my own shower curtain — a couple of yards of fabric, some grommets and four hems, couldn’t be that hard, right? white trevira drapes— and then decided it was crazy-go-nuts to take on a sewing project when we’re not even out of boxes yet.floral toile print shower curtain target When I got home, I did what any rational bargain-hunter would do and went to eBay to see if anyone was selling either the Anthropologie or Modcloth shower curtains at a discount. black fishtail swag curtainsNeither of those were available BUT there was this amazing deadstock…curtain factory outlet johannesburg

Covered in various nautical scenes for just $22, it’s now mine, ALL MINE. I’m sure I’m still going to dream about the other two, and possibly even regret my decision, but for now I’m buoyed (see what I did there?) by the number of breakfast tacos and queso I can buy with the difference.
