More important than the rod is the type of curtain and rod placement. A top pocket curtain will need a rod with sides. Tab curtains and top pocket curtains not as good as grommet top curtains for black out curtains. I use a grommet curtain and so cannot use a rod with sides, but if you place the curtain on the rod properly, there should be a turn to the wall outside the first grommet on each side.You need to hang the curtain higher and wider and with sufficient length so that the light is not at the very edge of the curtain or peeking through the grommet holes.
