However, with any old growth (or larger branches) one remembers that it is not exactly a "high-end" tool. Perhaps it's the fault of the operator, perhaps not. I found that pulling cord with one arm did not give enough "umph" to cut through a branch.

I moved into this place facing trees, shrubs, & bushes that have probably not been pruned in 40 years...so, when I'm ready to tackle the big projects, I will probably buy a better tool. I had seen one that the cord is not hanging loosely; I think THAT would be one thing I would rate as annoying with this one. Cord wraps around pole and after about 3 branches (turning for angles) one must stop what they're doing to lower it and unwind it. Yes, I would recommend this for lighter jobs, but not if you have major pruning of old overgrown trees. The pole is too flexible to be useful for sawing. The return spring on the pruner is too weak to reset the blade reliably. The snap lock that holds the pole extension slips. The wing nuts that hold the blade on loosen during use. I saw all these problems while using it for about fifteen minutes. The product may be useful for very light duty work, but I wouldn't bother unless you have plenty of time on your hands to fiddle around.

While the blade could stand to be a bit stiffer, it's still more than adequate for the job it's specified to do. And considering the outstanding price, it's hard to go wrong. I was able to cut through a 2" thick branch within about 10 minutes, and there was no apparent wear on the blade. I bought this, and immediately starting using it. It worked great until I realized the cutter bolt had fallen out and the ball bearing shot off like a bullet. Walmart did exchange it and I made sure the new one's nuts were nice and tight. So, months later, I pulled it out, checked everything was tight, and after 20 minutes of use - the bolt fell out and that ball bearing shot off again to who knows where. So, you have a tool that you need once or twice a year that fails in the middle of the job. I see others have had the same experience. I know there are a lot of products like this on the market, but for the price this lives up to it's expectations. Perfect for the occasional home owner's use.
