The definition behind blackout curtains, however, is often vague and inconsistent. Opacity level is a personal preference. With four levels of opacity to offer, Eclipse Curtains provide a clear guide to purchasing the exact curtain for your needs. When I got home and started putting them up to the window, the first thing I noticed was that the "cream" color is more of a very dark beige, but when I had all four panels up and stepped back to see if the color would work with the rest of the room, I noticed that all four of the panels were different lengths !!!!!!!!!!! Only one panel was true to the 84" length size listed on the package. one is at least two inches longer, and the other two panels are an inch shorter on one side than the other, which is 84.5" in length. So when they are hanging from the rod it almost has a random handkerchief hemline looking effect...which may not be too bad on a garment, but it looks ridiculous on a window treatment. Of course, I will be returning the panels, not only because of the issue of differing lengths, but also because they are more of a mushroom color than they "cream" In fairness, since I have been well pleased with other window treatments from Eclipse, I may decide to try another style from that brand and hope quality control was on their game the day they were manufactured :)
I purchased these last August 2011. They did an excellent job of blocking out the sunlight and heat. In fact they were so good, they even blocked cell phone signal. We had to open the curtains to make phone calls. I decided to wash them in May 2012. I followed the instructions on the care tag and washed them in cold water. The thermal backing melted in the washing machine and they came out a wadded, fused mess. I had to throw them away. I have contacted the Eclipse company via email and will wait to see what they have to say. If you are going to hang them, and never wash, I would say go ahead. If you plan to ever wash them, I would tell you to NOT buy this product. These curtains are awesome! They are a dark, rich brown and keep the light out amazingly. We had fabric wrapped tight around our windows because my husband is on duty at night, these do an even better job keeping light out and even some sound! The color is great, I have uploaded a picture so you can see the actual color.
Some of these on the sight are not quite true to color. I have a sun room that consist of 3 outside walls of large windows that face south, west and north. It's a lovely room with high ceilings and tons of light BUT it's also very COLD in the winter ( SLC, Utah) as well as HOT in the summer. I have blinds on the windows but wanted something that would add a decorative touch, at the same time be cost effective with heating/air conditioning. I love these drapes . They have both back tabs and pockets for hanging and they hang nicely. I had searched other sores and online for weeks...that didn't work. My daughter told me to look at Walmart...I thought she was nuts...I wanted something with some quality...I finally caved in and went, what a surprise! Next time I'll shop their first. I consider myself a high-end shopper that tends to purchase the best I can afford and I always cost compare and do tons of research first. I'm going back when I re-do my bedroom.... I bought 8 panels in dark brown.
They're durable & machine washable. I've had them for over a year & there are no frays anywhere, still in great shape after being washed multiple times. We needed curtains to block out the sun, we couldn't see the tv. They do the job very well. They also keep out drafts in the cold winter months, there is a noticable difference right away when you hang them up. They are average looking w/the way they hang & look on the wndows, they don't have defined noticable pleats, but they are so functional & do such a great job keeping out the sun, drafts, & the air conditioning in, they are acceptable without the pleats. I bought these curtains for my patio door...they are fantastic!!! There was a lot of cold coming thru the patio windows and since I hung these up the room is soooo much warmer. Will purchase the same kind when I decide to remodel and I have and will recommend these to family and friends I was very happy with the look of these curtains when I hung them, but as for them being black-out, they are not...not even close to 99% as advertised.
I re-hung my horizontal blinds to compensate, but I shouldn't have had to. It was too much trouble to return them since I already waited a week for them to arrive and had them up and the packaging discarded. I initially wanted to purchase the Samara style curtains, but they did not work with my 1" diameter wooden dowel. The fabric pocket did not slide on the wooden dowel. Also, curtains with grommets would bind on the dowel. The Owen style has additional back TABS that work great. Yes, they drag a little, but at least I can use them (unlike the pockets or grommets). Regarding the effectiveness of the blackout, it is good. Overall the curtains do a fine job darkening the room, but light 'peeks' through the decorative vertical stitches. At night, it's really dark. During the day, it will SEEM really dark until your eyes adjust, and then the curtains have a distinct 'glow' where light comes through. Overall, I'm satisfied, but not happy about paying $20 a panel for 4 panels.
