He was previously senior vice-president of Apple's retail division, and was awarded a golden hello worth $56m (£36m) when he joined in 2012. However, he parted with the tech giant after just six months and banked just $3m of the award. He worked at Tesco during the supermarket's golden years of rising sales and market share growth in the early 2000s.

More recently, Mr Browett was instrumental in spearheading the turnaround at Dixons, where he joined as CEO in 2007 and left in 2012. He has “quite a lot of experience” in multi-channel, according to a company spokesman, who added that online would “certainly be an area of focus”. Dunelm has been investing heavily in online shopping in recent months, rolling out delivery services and expanding its click and collect capability. In February, Mr Adderley said he wanted to see revenues rise 50pc in the medium-term. Asked about Mr Browett’s pay package, a spokesman said it would be at a similar level to that enjoyed by Mr Wharton. Mr Adderley will return to his previous role as executive deputy chairman next January. Andy Harrison, currently chief executive of UK-listed Whitbread, will take over as chairman on July 8, following the retirement of Geoff Cooper.
