Outfitting or updating your home’s curtains can be an expensive proposition. Thankfully, there are many ready-made curtain panels out there that you can easily upgrade using some clever Dritz® DIY supplies, coupled with simple sewing skills. With a few handy Dritz® supplies, you can give store-bought panels a designer look. We’re going to show you how to use drapery tapes, clip rings, weights and plastic rings to upgrade basic panels, giving them added structure and making them look custom-made. These are easy projects, requiring very basic sewing skills. Dritz® rod loop tape is a transparent tape that is sewn onto the back side of a curtain panel, or piece of fabric, making it “rod ready.”

The transparent rod loop tape can be added to any fabric panel – simply stitch the tape to the back of the panel near its top with invisible or matching thread. The rod loop tape not only accommodates your curtain rod, but gives your curtain panel structure, with soft folds that look rich and professionally made. (For more information, see the rod loop tape tutorial on our website.) Another type of transparent tape is Dritz® clip ring tape. Instead of loops, this drapery tape has bands to attach clip rings. Using this tape gives a basic panel a custom tailored look. Stitch the tape to the back of the panel as noted above, and then attach the clip rings to small bands on the back of the tape. There are 2 rows of bands, so you can decide if you want the panels to hang directly below your rod or have a little space from the rod to show off the rings. Insert your curtain rod through the rings – it really is that easy! The top curtain panel is what you get if you use the panel as purchased.

By adding the clip ring drapery tape and clip rings, this basic panel now has a much more sophisticated and modern look. (Interested to know more? Check out the clip ring tutorial on our website.) And what about inexpensive ready-made curtains that don’t hang straight? Dritz® zinc drapery weights can solve that problem. Our zinc weights are covered in a nonwoven fabric with a tab for stitching so they’re easy to apply! Just hand or machine stitch the drapery weights into curtain hems and/or side seams and say goodbye to flaring. Found a cute café or rod pocket panel? Here’s an easy way to turn it into a pleated valance with Dritz® plastic rings and string. Just make sure the panel is the same width as your window. Mark ring placements on the wrong side of panel starting about 4 to 10” from bottom edge. (We started 9 ½” from bottom because we wanted to show off the cute band at the lower edge.) Start at each side and then every 8 to 10” across the width of the panel.

Stitch ½” rings at each mark. We used the button setting on our sewing machine to attach the rings. They can be stitched by hand, too. Thread a 4” length of cord or string through a bottom ring and the one directly above it. Tie cord so rings are together. Repeat for all rings in the bottom row.
