Fabric-covered weights at the hem will minimize flapping curtains on windy days. If your curtains flare out and won't stay put, try sewing a covered drapery weight just inside the hem to help the curtains stay in position and improve the hang for a classic look. Select a weight appropriate for the fabric, such as a heavier weight for a heavier curtain, and try to find a fabric-covered weight with a sewing tab for easy attachment. As an alternative, a fabric-covered chain or lead hem tape that threads through the bottom hem can also help prevent your curtains from blowing in the wind and keep them looking their best. Rip out approximately 2 to 3 inches of stitching from the bottom hem of the drapes at each corner to help you insert the drapery weights, using a seam ripper. Position a covered drapery weight into one lower corner of the hem, approximately 1/2 inch from the bottom fold and 1/2 inch from the side edge. The front and back of the covered weight will be invisible from the outside.

Thread a hand-sewing needle with thread color-matched to the curtain color, and knot one end. Working from the back of the curtain, insert the needle into the gap between the face of the curtain and the hem at this corner to hide the knot. Sew at least five tiny stitches on the hem to catch the weight’s sewing tab. Knot the thread on the inside and trim close to the knot with scissors. No stitching is needed on the front of the draperies. Insert another weight into the remaining lower corner in the same way. Hang your curtain panel on the rod to view the hang of the curtain before you stitch the hem gaps. Observe your curtains from inside and outside your home. If your curtains need more weights, such as at 4-inch intervals along the inside hem, now is the time to decide. Remove the weighted drapes from the rod and then adjust the weights if necessary to create the preferred hang. Stitch the two gaps in the hem closed. Hang your curtains on the drapery hardware. Measure the bottom width of each panel to calculate the amount of chain or lead hem tape to purchase.

Thread a hand-sewing needle and knot one end of the thread. Stitch with tiny stitches on the hem side to catch and secure the chain ends. Stitch the two side gaps closed and hide the knot. Hang your weighted curtains on the rod; make any adjustments to ensure the chain remains evenly distributed.
