double curtain pole homebaseOriginal review:First lets start off with the basics. You should be able to hang a set of shelves, or put together Ikea furniture in order to install this system. Ikea has their own set of directions that is a series of pictures (no words). You need good set of wire cutters, and screws to attach the bases to a stud or toggle bolts 1/4X3IN ZINC TOGGLE BOLT/WING [Misc.] [Misc.] [Misc.] [Misc.] [Misc.] [Misc.] if there is no stud where you want to hang it, the plastic wall anchors are not strong enough, you something need heavy duty.
The left side base is threaded backwards so it wont unscrew when you tighten the wire. So to tighten the connector to the base turn it to the left, or counter clockwise.It took an entire 15 minutes to install this. (Although I do know my way around a tape measure)I like it a lot, its very clean and not bulky. This product is complete crap. It's impossible to get the wire tight and in correctly without stripping pieces. Also doesn't come with screws. Not worth it at all. Another great IKEA productSure there are similar products out there (wire clamps and turnbuckles) but this went up in less than 15 mins. Hardest part was making sure my 14ft run was level. A total pain in the butt to install. Looked absolutely beautiful for 5 seconds before the cable pulled out from the turnbuckle and the whole thing came down. Returned it twice since the posts were not cut correctly and would not screw into the holes. Quality control problems: perhaps a bad batch. So, after posting How To: Hang Curtains Across Any Room, we were super pleased to recieve this recommendation from Mike for Ikea's Dignitet Hardware (with pics!). I just hung some curtains from the ceiling to divide the space in my loft. I used the new DIGNITET hardware from Ikea and had pretty good luck with it, and I like its clean look. It comes with 197 inches of steel wire, which you cut down if you don't need that much (best to have some fairly burly wire cutters on hand). See Pics: 1 2 3 4 5 6 Similar to the turnbuckles mentioned above, you turn a threaded rod with a small allen wrench (included) to create the right amount of tension on the cable.
The only problem I ran into, is that I used drywall anchors and screws to secure it to the ceiling. But the anchors aren't really adequate for this application so I can't get quite enough tension in the cable (or the anchors will just pull out of the ceiling). So I might have to redo it with stronger anchors.
