The car maker says the new model was “thoroughly tested” in Australia during its development, and claims that testing played a central role in determining the global tune for the Triton’s “engine torque characteristics, high-speed stability on gravel surfaces and overall towing performance and stability”. GLS and Exceed variants get the new-generation Super Select 4WD II system, which offers four driving modes including a locked 4WD mode.

The Exceed also comes standard with an electronic rear differential lock. As reported earlier this month, all 2016 Mitsubishi Triton models have earned ANCAP’s maximum five-star safety rating, with seven airbags and electronic stability control standard across the range. A reverse-view camera is available as an accessory on GLX variants and standard in the higher two grades. Standard specification highlights of the tradie-friendly GLX include a tilt- and reach-adjustable steering column, multi-information trip computer, Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming, USB port, hill start assist and trailer stability assist system. The sports-styled GLS ($4000 more than its equivalent GLX) adds 17-inch alloy wheels (up from the GLX’s steel 16s), painted bumpers, HID headlights and LED daytime running lights, foglights, side steps, sports bar, reverse-view camera, auto-folding side mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, and an enhanced audio system with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and a DAB digital radio tuner

The flagship Exceed (also $4000 more than the equivalent GLS) additionally gains the differential lock, auto headlights and wipers, smart key with push-button start, steering wheel-mounted paddleshifters, leather upholstery and leather-look door trim inserts, power driver’s seat, and the Mitsubishi Multi Communication System with 7.0-inch touchscreen, 3D satellite navigation mapping and SD card reader. While retaining the old model’s exterior dimensions and wheelbase, Mitsubishi’s designers have liberated extra headroom, shoulder-room and legroom inside the cabin, and claims to have increased comfort by fitting larger and more supportive front seats and increasing the angle on the rear bench. It also says extra attention to detail and consideration has been applied to the quality of materials used, claiming a significantly more upmarket feel through the cabin. The 2016 Mitsubishi Triton officially goes on sale across the Japanese car maker’s national dealer network on May 1.
