curtains randomer

A look across at the array labels that North London’s Randomer has released on; Hessle Audio, Hemlock and Number to name a few, is as good an indicator as any of his genre-bending versatility. Carving his own niche at the crossection of House, Jungle and Techno, Randomer is an artist who keeps his listener on their toes. Randomer disects drum & bass, grime, hiphop, heavy metal, techno and orchestral music in this week’s YouTube Session…Had a lovely chat with Hodge whilst he was chilling in a bath spa in Shanghai! Yeah really good thanks, currently in Shanghai writing music with Tzusing, fly back tomorrow morning for the show! So you’ve been getting about a bit! With a recent tour in America and Canada, and just now you’re in China, tell us about some of the parties you’ve played and tour stories Yeah, so many amazing parties it’s crazy. Like literally every show I’ve done has been great and it would take forever to talk about themThe most recent one was I ended up playing an after party in

shelter in Shanghai which sadly is closing at the end of the year, that’s an amazing club, literally it’s an underground bunker. army actually still own it, which is absolutely mad. and everyone went mental. How did you get into production? Did you teach yourself? I studied music technology at University in Bristol, but yeah asides from some technical shit I basically taught my self to actually write music, you can’t really be taught to understand the subtleties of most music.. it’s kinda about obsessing over it and then experimentations with trial and error I think. Absolutely love your latest release with Randomer on Livity Sound, you’ve collaborated with a few different producers, can you tell us a bit about the process, how they come about and how you workI love working with other people, the longer I write tracks the kinda harder it gets on your own. Like if your with someone else you can catch a vibe and be like ok that do that more, that’s great, or

they can tell me if what I’m doing is awful, much quicker than I’d realise if I was on my own. On your own it’s harder to get that fun feeling too so I love doing the joint productions. All of that’s not to say I don’t like writing on my own… it’s just that’s a bit more of a mediative, cathartic process which isnt as fun to me. So we’ve been chatting about your next release, fill us in on it! It’s just been announced this week, should be out real soon! a Bristol label I really like called NoCorner. Here’s the video for the B Side - Personality Shift…It’s a departure from my usual stuff, maybe it’s a reaction to djing out loads recently, I wanted to do something that wasn’t just soley aimed at the club, but stuff you can still play in a dance floor set, but who knows.. writing those tracks and am excited friends were up for releasingWhen you write a tune, what’s the starting point? There’s no exact rule, sorry this is a rubbish answer but yeah..

all sorts of ways, maybe jamming on a synth, others running samplesliterally could be anything. Other than music, what are your favourite pastimes? I love being in other countries and eating, which is a fortunate perk of djing…. kinda lucky right haha. What inspires you in general? What have been your most epic moments dj'ing? Playing Glastonbury was pretty mad. What have you heard about Neighbourhood? What are you expecting?
