Join the turtle watching volunteers to patrol the beach at night to protect the mother turtles whilst they lay eggs, as well as helping to collect the eggs which are then cared for at the conservation project’s hatcheries, until the baby turtles are born and released back into the ocean. This famous ancient monastery, which still functions to this day, is situated on a 210 metre high rocky hillock, a few minutes inland of Tangalle. A historian’s treasure trove, this tour includes ancient caves with painted murals and statues, all with a story to tell. Explore an important wetland sanctuary that covers 20 kilometres of beaches, lagoons and scrub that is home to more than 150 bird species, including winter migratory birds and large flocks of flamingos. The lagoons are a natural habitat for crocodiles and on dry land, herds of up to 60 elephants can be seen. From October to January the park is also visited by endangered marine turtles who come ashore to lay their eggs. Handunugoda Low Country Tea Plantation
