I was born Pauline Matthews and grew up in Bradford as one of three children – I had an older brother, David, and an older sister, Betty. My father Fred worked in the mills as a textile weaving supervisor, and my mother, Mary, was a housewife. Sports fan: Kiki, centre, on her school hockey team Being the youngest, I was a bit of a daddy's girl, and sought attention from an early age by singing. know where I got my voice, but ours was always a musical house. My sister played piano, and my brother sang, and his rock 'n' roll LPs used to lie around the house. At the age of five I went to St Oswald's, a mixed Church of England school. I always loved school and the idea that there were two universes: the 'safe' world of home, and the more exciting time at school. I'll always remember one teacher, Roy Hemingway. He really cared about his pupils. If he was giving a lesson on coal-mining, he would make us go under our desks and he'd draw the curtains to make the classroom dark.
He made you feel there was a bigger world out there. Within a year my sister had got me to stand up and sing in front of her class, and I've been singing for people ever since. Happy memories: Kiki grew up in a musical household But I was never particularly academic, so it was no great surprise when I failed my 11-plus and consequently went to Wibsey Secondary Modern. I did all right in English, history and music, which were the subjects that most interested me. studying history sowed the seeds of a lifetime interest in the subject. But I was always in the middle of the class. I'm afraid I always had the type of school report that everyone else I know in the music business had: 'Could do better if she wasn't looking out of the window the whole time.' I left school at 16 without taking any exams, but I knew by then I was going to be a singer. I'd known that since I was nine or ten. Singing was always a huge part of my identity, and while I never sang at school after that first time – I always had a pop rather than a choir voice – I'd regularly take part in talent contests when we went on holiday.
