Traverse rods are used for a billowing, full look that you can open or close easily. Operating a traverse curtain rod isn’t difficult; pull the cord and the drapes open or close. Installing or removing a traverse rod seems more intimidating, but the myriad parts and pieces aren’t as confusing as they appear. A traverse rod system consists of mounting brackets, a center support, the rod itself and sliding mechanisms that hold drapery hooks and move back and forth inside a channel in the rod. Whether you need to remove a traverse rod to have the cords restrung, or you simply changed your decorating style, a couple of simple tools are all you’ll need. Lift the drapery hooks out of the sliders and carriers, if any hooks are present. If there are draperies hanging on the rod, lift out the draperies and hooks together. Sliders are small pieces, usually plastic, that move left to right along the curtain rod and hold the draperies and hooks. Carriers are larger sliding pieces, usually metal, on the curtain rod.

There is one carrier at each end of the rod, and there may also be one or two at the center of the rod. Turn the bolt or screw at the front edge of the center support bracket counterclockwise, if your rod has one. This releases the rod from the support. You may need a flat or Phillips screwdriver, or the bolt may turn by hand. Turned in the opposite direction, it closes the slot and locks the rod into the brackets. Some cams have a lipped edge or tab, which lets you turn the mechanism by hand. Others have a slot or notch, which requires a flat screwdriver to turn. Pull the rod off the mounting brackets. If it doesn’t release, tilt the top edge of the rod out toward you and lift out the rod.
