When we alighted from our transfer in the city’s oldest neighbourhood, we followed our host down a dusty cobbled side street to a large disconcerting wooden door. Us holidaymakers always bring a mixed bag of feelings when we first approach our booked hotel; excitement, nervousness, anticipation, and above all hope that the website photos lived up to reality. Thankfully when the hinges opened, our welcome exceeded our expectations. An intriguingly dark and perfumed lobby possessed a secret door which led to the hotel’s breathtaking pillared courtyard. You would never of guessed that the other side of the wall was dressed in white chiffon drapes, plush sofas, fabulous architecture and stunning flooring. The Patio reflected off the green tiled water display which fills each evening illuminating the stars. The gentle lighting through traditional lanterns makes this a very romantic setting for an evening under the night sky. The luxury, adult-only spa hotel opened in February 2016 with a dozen beautifully and individually decorated bedrooms including one suite.

Designed by architect Charles Kaisin and inspired by the famous Charles Baudelaire poem L’Invitation au Voyage, every bit of furniture, from the magnificent lampshades to the shiny trinkets, had their place. After a welcome drink of sweet mint tea, we were given a personal tour of the grounds including the luxurious underground spa kitted out with a majestic Hammam, elaborate decor and a menu of lavish treatments. A Hammam is a steam room, similar to a Turkish bath, where Moroccans habitually go each week to cleanse themselves and this was just one of the many native delights guests can experience. Dinner is served in The Library, where 1,083 books are folded into letters of the alphabet, spelling out the Baudelaire poem, while the Pixel Room - adorned with 23,000 diamond shapes cut from silk, depicting a scene from the Jemaa el Fna - is a dreamy place to enjoy tea and pastries. We continued our tour upstairs on to the pretty roof terrace overlooking the Djemma el-Fna square and its exotic souks, traditional artisans and mysterious street performers.

It is here where you’ll also be able to listen to the ancient morning rituals each day. A visit to the bustling spice markets are a must, but be prepared to dodge the crowds and haggle for a bargain. Many of the enchanting bedrooms at Almaha have private access to a secluded area of the gorgeous roof top, separated by dainty hedges abundant with delicate white flowers. Guests can soak up the north African rays on personal sun-loungers and enjoy a continental breakfast alfresco at their leisure. We took one of the terrace staircases down to an enchanting suite where our eyes widened even further. The wonderful scents from the lobby greeted us once more as we meandered around our large pad decadent with carved cedar doors, feature fireplaces, embellished metal lanterns, bronze-burnished fittings and a candle lit-marble bath. A queen size bed you could get lost in, thick cosy rugs, a large hidden plasma television, fluffy dressing gowns and babouche slippers, made each stay a sumptuous yet comforting escape.

With the sun rays beaming an attractive 30 degrees, we quickly freshened up and switched into our swim wear to explore the roof top pool. Shielded by the wind and adorned with Moroccan fixtures, the pool was big enough for cooling off and splashing around but not long enough for length swimming. Each sun bed came with a large soft towel, so don’t make precious room in your suitcase for one. With exemplary hospitality at it’s forefront, guests can order authentic food and refreshing drinks from the friendly staff throughout the day. During our visit, we enjoyed candle-lit romantic dinners of tantalizing Moroccan tagines inside the Pixel Room rather than in the more formal library. We sat at low tables on chairs dressed in silk and ate off beautiful stencilled crockery as we looked at the incredible artwork of the city recreated, all on diamond shaped fabric. A highlight of every day was breakfast. Tucking into a continental feast of delicious breads, pancakes, cereals, boiled eggs and fruit on our sunny terrace was pure bliss.
