Years ago I toured a chouriço factory in Fall River, Mass., and its owner told me about sending packets of the spicy sausage to soldiers abroad — young men and women from that city’s tight-knit Portuguese-American community, serving their country far from home, solaced by a beloved heritage food.Such culinary loyalty defines the Primavera Pub on the Hartford-Newington line. From the outside, the restaurant doesn’t look promising. But walk through the door and you instantly feel comfortable. The walls display photos of soccer teams, family members — some in military uniform — and Portuguese and American flags. At 2 p.m. the bar hosts middle-aged men eating, drinking wine and conversing. A big-screen TV broadcasts the news in Portuguese. Translation of daily specials on the board is amiably provided. It feels like someone’s home, and you are a welcome guest.Historically, Portugal was a great seafaring nation, and Primavera’s offerings reflect that legacy, right from the cod-cake and shrimp-cake appetizers.

This is a hearty cuisine, steeped in seafood that in turn is steeped in wine and garlic. The portions turned out by the chef, Joe Moreira, are immense, big bowls teeming with seafood, like garlic shrimp with cubed deep-fried potatoes, or a big tureen of clams, the white-wine broth liberally dosed with cilantro. The basics come in various combinations: grilled shrimp and squid, or shrimp and clams with pasta and lots of Parmesan. Portuguese cooking relies on a roundelay of elemental tastes — garlic, olive oil, wine, lemon, cilantro — that I find irresistible. Mop up with big soft rolls, and you’re in heaven. There’s plenty for the meat lover. Wild boar was a big cut grilled with olive oil, garlic and wine. Rib-eye steaks, topped with a fried egg or with sautéed mushrooms in a wine reduction, are high quality and a steal at $15.50. (Primavera has 1960s pricing; my lunch one day — steak sandwich, soup, glass of wine, flan — came to $10.) Mr. Moreira’s version of picadinho is an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink compilation of grilled beef and pork with sautéed onions and peppers, mushrooms, sliced chouriço and shrimp thrown in for good measure.

Another special, rabbit, was described as a stew but was really much more, a meaty half rabbit, braised to perfect tenderness, with brilliant green broccoli rabe and quartered boiled potatoes in a peppery red-wine broth thick with tomatoes and suffused with garlic.

kohl's fire retardant curtainsCooking lore abounds with novel ways to tenderize octopus: beating it against rocks, drying it a day in the sun, even running through a washing machine. Mr. Moreira simply cooks it in water for an hour before grilling it. That suffices to create a dish that is succulent and surprisingly tender. There were other delights. A bowl of vegetable soup, loaded with beans, kale, cabbage, carrots and pasta, was essentially a Tuscan ribollita, just what we needed on a cold, snowy evening.

The classic dish of porco à alentejana arrived as an enormous bowl of large clams and chunks of pork tenderloin marinated in garlic, paprika and white wine and browned in olive oil, with the added benefit of a giardiniera of pickled cauliflower and carrots. The star of the desserts was a toasted almond cake with a creamy frosting and a topping of cinnamon and ground almonds.Primavera is not fine dining. It’s casual, it’s inexpensive, it’s delicious, and it’s a lot. The restaurant exudes a special conviviality. I ate lunch at the bar, and my neighbor, a regular, touted the pescadinhas he was eating — fried hake served picturesquely with its tail in its mouth — joking that “we say they just swim in circles!” Soon he was telling me about leaving Lisbon as a teenager and coming to Hartford many decades ago. He mentioned his ex-wife, then nodded behind us. “She’s over there,” he said, “eating with her mother.”This is a restaurant so friendly and so delicious that even divorced couples and ex-mothers-in-law dine happily in one small room.
