The room is teeny tiny, so it was definitely a challenge! I wanted the room to be kid-friendly yet elegant and timeless, with plenty of colours. My first move was to place her bed in the centre of the room, to make it a nice focal point. I designed and made a colourful bedskirt and matching pillow, and also used the same fabric in the frames above her bed. The coral outdoor rug is perfect in that room, as it's very kid-friendly. The oak shelves bring some warmth while adding a lot of storage. I completed the look with simple blackout white curtains and blinds for a good night sleep! She's very proud of her room, and it means the world to me!

But, having chosen to live her life as if it were the start of the Second World War, she’s not about to find him on Tinder. Joanna doesn’t have a washing machine, computer, or a TV. She washes in a tin bath and uses a chamber pot at night so she doesn’t have to visit the outdoor toilet. She doesn’t have a car and cycles to her job as a cleaner, wearing her Land Girl uniform, on a 1937 Raleigh pedal bike. She occasionally spends the evening in the air raid shelter at the end of the garden behind her end of terrace 1930s home, which even has blackout curtains and bomb blast tape on the windows (although no central heating). ‘From being very young the 30s and 40s always had a pull on me. Visiting museums with 30s/40s rooms I just wanted the rooms to be “alive”.
