It may not seem as exciting as, say, a cast list or a season announcement. But hey, folks, you can't have non-profit theaters without boards of directors. Those who serve should be recognized and applauded.Hartford Stage has seven new members on its board of directors: Richard Alleyne, senior vice president and associate general counsel at The Hartford; arts-loving court reporter Nancy Hoffman; Alan Levin, vice chair of Locke Lord; Dr. Wilfredo Nieves, president of Capital Community College; Kim L. Richards, vice president of producer business development at CIGNA; Lena Rodriguez, president and CEO of Community Renewal Team; and Rosalie Roth, director of development at the Children's Law Center. Four board officers were re-elected for another term: President Sue Ann Collins, Vice President Robert V. Lally, Secretary David R. Jimenez and Treasurer John L. Sennott. There are also new faces at Hartford Stage's Stage One, the members of which (according to a press release) "support the mission of Hartford Stage by being observers to the board of directors, preparing them for nonprofit board service themselves."
They are: pediatrician Dr. Emilee Colella; Jackie Barrieau Iacovazzi, assistant manager for UTC State Government Relations; Sean Kim of Hitachi Consulting; and Stephen Roth, owner/director of ELD Enterprises.Westport Country Playhouse has six new members on its board of trustees. They include retired novelist Jane Green, investment manager David Tillson, theater director Marietta Battaglia White, Jessie A. Gilbert of Cummings & Lockwood's private clients group and Stephen Corman, a retired IBM manager and longtime advocate for prostate cancer awareness. They join 32 other trustees. The board is chaired by Barbara Streicker. This year's Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song has gone to Smokey Robinson. It seems appropriate since Gershwin is a name associated with Broadway musicals and Robinson is a main character in "Motown the Musical." In fact, of the eight recipients of the Gershwin Prize thus far — Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Hal David, Burt Bacharach, Carole King, Billy Joel and Willie Nelson — nearly all of them have bona fide Broadway credits … and Nelson just released a tribute album of Gershwin tunes.
"Motown the Musical," which features several songs each by Robinson and Wonder, returns to Broadway this week. The cast is the same one that appeared on tour at Hartford's The Bushnell in March.Five Shows For Seven AngelsAmong the superstars being brought back to life at Seven Angels Theatre next season: George and Gracie Allen, J.C.
